MONROEVILLE, Pa .– It’s been a busy two weeks for Derrick Davis Jr as he plays his final season of high school football as he nears the end of his recruiting process
As Davis and his Gateway Gators look to defend their Class 5A title in the WPIAL playoffs, the No 2 Security ranked 2 in the recruiting class of 2021 also makes his final visits to campus as he prepares to take on his university commitment one week from Saturday
Last weekend Davis traveled to Columbus to join 10 of Ohio State’s 2021 engagements at the Buckeye Bash though they were not allowed to attend the home game of the Ohio State vs. Nebraska or spending time with Ohio State coaches due to the current recruiting period, Davis enjoyed the opportunity to learn about many Buckeyes’ engagements and explore Columbus. with their
« It was a cool experience. It was cool being with the rookies, » Davis told Eleven Warriors after Gateway’s 14-0 win over Penn Hills in the first round of the playoffs on Friday night. « We all really relax together All the good guys, we all have the same goal, and that’s for the NFL »

Davis makes one last campus tour this weekend at LSU, where he says he wants to get « a feel for the campus and see if it’s the right choice, » before making his decision next week between Penn State, Ohio State, LSU, Pitt and Georgia
While Penn State has been seen as the frontrunner of Davis, who is ranked as the No. 4 hope in the State of Pennsylvania for the 2021 class, he doesn’t drop many clues as to which direction he’s leaning, and his decision to visit Ohio state just two weeks before his engagement suggests the Buckeyes remain very much in contention
In the end, Davis said he « trusted my instincts » in deciding where he should play his college football.
« If my gut tells me no, then this is what it is, » Davis said. « That, and if my parents think this is the right environment for me »
Davis said he’s looking for a school that has « a great campus, great coaches, great academics » and he’s looking for the school that can put him in the best possible position to achieve his goal of playing professionally. He will ultimately have to decide whether Ohio State is the school that best fits those criteria, but he said he speaks regularly with Ryan Day and director of player personnel Mark Pantoni and he liked « how much there is always honesty » with him
« They’re going to prepare me mentally and physically for me to be dominant on the pitch, » Davis said of how Ohio State could help him achieve his goals
We will learn next weekend when Davis plans to continue his football career next year First, however, he will be looking to continue his high school football career for a few more weeks as Gateway takes on Peters Township this week. next in a semi-final of last year’s WPIAL Class 5A Championship match
He tried to stay focused on that very goal while making his varsity decision, and while he was proud his defense held Penn Hills to a Friday night shutout, Davis – who plays both sides of the ball for the Gators and rushed touchdown and an interception on Friday – said his team still had « a lot to work on »
