Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie remains hospitalized at Morristown Medical Center, where he was admitted on Saturday after testing positive for COVID-19
The 58-year-old Mendham resident announced on Saturday morning he had tested positive for coronavirus, a day after President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump announced they had tested positive Since then, more than a dozen aides and officials in Trump’s circle have also tested positive
Christie, who has struggled with his weight and has a lifelong history of asthma, tweeted that he checked in to the hospital on Saturday, citing concerns he was at greater risk of developing complications from the virus
The former governor did not explain what symptoms he was exhibiting or how he was being treated He has not tweeted since Saturday night
Star-Ledger columnist Tom Moran spoke to Christie on the phone Monday The former governor said Jordan’s King Abdullah called to wish him good luck, annoying Moran, who had doubted their friendship in a 2012 chronicle Moran also wrote that Christie looked « hoarse but didn’t cough once » during their 10 minute phone call, and that Christie would not discuss her condition.
Gov. Phil Murphy said in a TV interview on Monday that he had had « private communications » with Christie over the weekend, but had « no idea » of his condition
In the week before he tested positive for COVID-19, Christie spent four days helping Trump prepare for the first presidential debate against former Vice President Joe Biden, often in a room with five or six people where no one wore a mask Christie – a longtime Trump friend and Republican ally and compatriot – also attended the now infamous Rose Garden ceremony where Trump appointed Judge Amy Coney Barett to the U.S short Supreme
At least 10 other people at the Rose Garden event on September 28 have since tested positive, including Kellyanne Conway, a New Jersey native, former adviser to the president, and Bill Stepien, Trump campaign manager Masks and social distancing were largely ignored at the ceremony, now fears it will be a super-broadcaster event
Christie also visited ABC News studios in New York on Tuesday night for post-debate coverage The network, for which Christie is a paid political analyst, has since ordered employees exposed to the virus to be quarantined
The former governor said in a tweet that he tested negative, as required, every day before heading to the White House last week, but took another coronavirus test on Friday after the news of Trump’s health had been revealed
Hours before Trump revealed he had tested positive for the virus, which claimed the lives of 210,000 Americans, the president was at his Bedminster golf club for a fundraiser and a panel discussion with well paid donors
Christie said he was not at the fundraiser, which was attended by 206 people The state is already working to contact Trace attendees and 19 Trump National employees who worked on the event
Trump’s fundraising led to an uproar as New Jersey faced spikes in new coronavirus cases, mostly in coastline counties of New Jersey Murphy called it « reckless «
