Odell Beckham Jr tore up his ACL on Sunday chasing an interception from Baker Mayfield Surprisingly, this was sort of a turning point in the Browns’ favor as Mayfield played an essentially perfect three-quarters of football after the fall of OBJ Cleveland took a last-second victory on Mayfield’s penny over Donovan Peoples-Jones with 11 seconds left
This sequence of events has sparked discussion in the football world about whether Mayfield is a better player without his most talented receiver on the pitch Statistics like the one below from two ESPN personalities have been presented
I’m going out on a branch here Ready? The Browns aren’t, in fact, a better team without Beckham dressing Mayfield is, in fact, worse off without his most talented failure available to catch anything thrown in his general direction
OBJ wasn’t quite the same game-changing force in those brown uniforms as he was in Blue Giants, but he was always good enough in his first season at Cleveland last year, he caught 74 passes for 1,035 yards and four touchdowns Not exactly what a team looks for in a player who made just under $ 17 million, but that’s also not a scrub
I can’t disprove the stats posted above, so let’s look at this from a logical standpoint No one is claiming that other Cleveland drop-outs are better than Beckham The argument is just that, without OBJ , Mayfield playing better It would be both hard to believe and impossible to prove that Mayfield simply turns into a better player without his best receiver on the pitch, so what’s the point of a footballing mindset?
Is Mayfield less inclined to force the ball at Beckham when he’s not on the pitch? That might make sense until you look at the 2019 stats In games where OBJ has been targeted six times or less, the Browns were 1-5 In games where Mayfield has watched OBJ 10 or more times, the Browns have a 3-3 record Maybe they just weren’t a good football team last year, regardless of Mayfield’s tendency to force the ball to his best gap
And this year? In four wins at Cleveland (not counting last Sunday), Beckham has been targeted at least six times The Browns’ best win of the season has come against Dallas and Beckham Jr has been targeted eight times this game We have 22 sets of evidence, and nothing suggests a correlation between how often the Browns go their way and how often they win soccer games If a guy was the problem, that correlation would probably exist, right?
OBJ doesn’t point out numbers suggested by his talent or contract level. It makes sense that Mayfield is more inclined to dismiss the ball when his no 1 option isn’t in the game But that doesn’t mean that he’s a better QB for that, and that certainly doesn’t mean OBJ is the problem at Cleveland The team will likely win more football games this season, but that won’t and shouldn’t be mentioned as a reason why Beckham is the reason she struggled to do it before she got hurt
