Few states epitomize all of the chaos of 2020 like Wisconsin, a key state in this week’s election The state marked a major turning point in the 2016 election Heavily contested and traditionally blue, Wisconsin has picked Donald Trump by less than 1%, helping him win the Electoral College – and the presidency The state is also crucial for the current elections and has had a turbulent year in the spotlight

Statewide coronavirus cases have increased and a field hospital has been opened on state fair grounds to help overwhelmed hospitals This summer, Kenosha has been rocked by violent protests after Jacob Blake’s police shooting During a protest against racial injustice, a law enforcement-obsessed teenager shot and killed two protesters and injured a third, actions that were hailed by the extreme right and defended by Trump

BuzzFeed News worked with Wisconsin photographer Lauren Justice and shared with locals their thoughts on the upcoming election in a state deeply divided and facing long-standing racism and the worsening pandemic For logistical reasons, we focused on the southeastern part of the state, around Kenosha, Milwaukee and surrounding areas.Rural and urban populations both described feeling neglected and struggling to navigate politics in their personal relationships

We did not explicitly ask about the candidates as people expressed reluctance to alienate their friends and neighbors further We asked, however, what they would like to see changed, how they were handling the escalation partisanship and relentless media coverage, and how they wanted the pandemic to be addressed, among other issues Everyone seemed ready for the election to be over and move on, although that will still have to be decided.

« I returned to the family farm in 2014 and now manage in partnership with my brother I have been an active member of the Farm Bureau for over a decade at the local, state and now national level I started as president of the association of young farmers in his county and I continue to sit on the board of directors

« Right now I see myself looking for answers, looking ahead and hoping that our family farm can withstand the storms we have been through. This year has brought unprecedented changes and realities to the dairy industry As a young dairy farmer, I am deeply concerned about the future of us Agriculture is more than a business, it is a way of life, it is our passion, our heritage and our purpose is to keep moving forward That said, I look at our political scene and our candidates on how they can build farming communities and family farms to have the capacity not only to maintain but to succeed in the future Over the past year, I have increased my involvement in politics Ask more questions, listen more, open my eyes to new ways of thinking Although my core beliefs remain strong, I know I need to stay open to it. that this election could lead us As a young dairy farmer I am looking for other farmers to better understand their point of view With so much uncertainty in many parts of the country and the world, I think it is so important to see all games I’m doing my best to do this «

« I was born in a small rural town in southern Ethiopia and adopted to the United States when I was about four years old. I have lived in Milwaukee for thirteen years now

« From steadily increasing coronavirus cases to the Jacob Blake shooting in Kenosha and the gun violence that ensued afterwards, Wisconsin doesn’t look good Hope this election year , we will be able to recognize which presidential candidate will put us in a better position to move forward, but also recognize that we must continue to fight against the structurally imperialist settlement in which we all live, regardless of who wins the election.

« It’s a little frustrating not being able to vote at the moment, but I’m happy to be working with the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin and Youth Rising Up as an initiative with my school to encourage students in age to vote to register I think my role as a minor, but socially and politically active, is to make sure my friends are aware of the importance of their vote Even though a vote may seem irrelevant , it still has the power to move an entire election The person we choose to represent us, in all aspects of government, influences the policies that are made These policies impact people in situations that may not be worrying for some people, but they need to think outside their privilege if they think everyone should have basic human rights It is important to reaffirm that after the presidential election, we must constantly voice the pressure for anti-racist policies and call people to power when they do not represent the people »

« I have been a resident of Kenosha forever I currently own Lou Perrine’s gas and grocery store I have been a serial entrepreneur since I was in diapers doing everything from trucking company to outlet public speaking, and I recently owned a salon with my wife

« I am a unicorn, a true free-thinker American who finds no identity with either party I lean left on social issues but right on tax issues I despise the system bipartite and find the fringes of these toxic parties

« I don’t see much changing Biden / Harris will campaign on the far left but come back to the same if elected, and Trump will just continue to be Trump The system needs a total overhaul And when I say that I’m not talking about a socialist agenda or a far-right agenda We need to rethink the way we operate capitalism (which I love) and eliminate corporatism (which I despise) A real change in our political system begins with campaign reform and term limits Until then there will be this broken system fueled by the rich and big business

« Wisconsin turned out to be a great swing state in the last election and it will be this election again Naturally we will get coverage just for that. Regarding the riots, I was very disappointed with the how the media portrayed Kenosha My business was at the heart of all the riots Me, my father and some local residents stayed on our property for six consecutive nights The local residents protesting for the change were peaceful They were suffering and expressed their opinions in the right way Were there any bad local actors who took advantage of the situation? Sure, but for the most part the damage and destruction that has happened in my town has come from outside tours My city is strong, we come together and will have changed for the better after this # kenoshastrong «

« Born and raised in Milwaukee, I have been heavily involved in community work, youth development and the arts

« One observation is that during elections we see a ton of advertisements and words thrown at us during those times, but what about what happens after? what changes are essential for moving forward and bridging the gap between our fellow citizens and our political colleagues

« I am a person who believed with all my heart that more than likely you must be the change I can only give to my community and inspire while being inspired to work on our community brick by brick to cultivate young people of tomorrow I manage by putting my hands in the community to feed and work with us, the people! «

« I have lived in Wisconsin since my mother moved to the Burlington area in 2000 and have resided in Kenosha since 2006 I have been a computer scientist and have worked in industrial maintenance my entire working life, but I found a call for political activism after the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd

« I consider myself an active protester and activist Growing up in a Republican-leaning family I have always been told that my views will become more conservative with age, but the reality turned out to be the opposite I consider myself anti-fascist and consider the threat of American fascism to be one of the greatest threats to international security

« My political commitment has changed a lot this year I had never been to a protest, and politics was just about drunken arguments between friends before this year While I have always supported BLM, I have remained silent and inactive on the sidelines On the first night of the George Floyd protests, I decided to watch the protests and was present outside the Milwaukee Police Department District 5 station That night I was gassed for staying there and saw the police get aggressive with individuals who were not instigators The next day I read their press release filled with lies, hype and pro-police propaganda, and it changed everything for me Now I’m an active protester, attending as many events as possible and working to create meaningful change and educate the public

« I sometimes feel like Wisconsin is portrayed as this place where nothing bad happens and » how could that happen to our quiet little town? « seems to be pushed a lot I differ in this perspective Wisconsin is one of the worst states in the country for racial justice, and it needs to be described It’s time Wisconsin was exposed for our systematic racism, corruption and brutality Police It breaks my heart that it took the KPD shoot of Jacob Blake, the mass shooting in Kenosha, as well as the community of Wauwatosa and the #JusticeforTheeThree marches to finally put some much-needed pressure on the state of Wisconsin to create meaningful reform »

« I see myself in the silent majority in the current political climate I would like to see the economy get back on track and reduce the deficit The coronavirus has changed my relationship with politics because I own a small dairy company and cafe owner and I’m conservative I don’t like the direction the Democrats are going

« Wisconsin is more conservative than described The state has many rural areas and agriculture is widespread in this state The state of cheese has many hard working people, and communities of Milwaukee and Madison’s make up only a small part of the state, but are described as the majority »

« My name is Tanya McLean I was born and raised in Kenosha until I was 14, then moved but returned to Wisconsin when I was 28 I am the founder and executive director of Leaders of Kenosha I am also a clinician and registered mental health educator

« In the current political narrative, I see myself and my organization as a vehicle for change, hope and inspiration

« The change I would most like to see with the upcoming elections is a president and lawmakers who value the lives of African descendants and this value is reflected in their legislation and policies

« I face the national divide seen in this election by diligently organizing to ensure that Blacks and Maroons, the underserved and underrepresented people vote, first and foremost, and understand power of their vote and how it will be reflected in the polls

« I think because of the shooting of Jacob Blake in my hometown and all the unrest that has occurred, the black and brown community has been described as ‘thugs’ and ‘criminals’, I live in the community that was set on fire down I was there and watched people who were not from our community and who did not look like us burn But this negative narrative that was painted pushes me even more to fight for what is right for the African descendants of my community «

« As a museum professional, art photographer and community arts advocate, I invest my work and time to promote innovation and creativity I was born in Milwaukee and lived in the city most of my life For almost two decades I have worked in Racine and also have an art studio there So both communities in Southeast Wisconsin feel right at home

« My hope after the election is to see a structured plan to move forward – together I also think it will be essential to include diverse perspectives and voices from across the country as the leadership develops a plan to move forward. ‘productive action to fight the coronavirus and rebuild the economy

« At the start of 2020, I didn’t feel my voice was making much of a difference in national politics When the coronavirus changed our entire lives, it also seemed to establish a common experience and purpose I had hoped for that we could work together to fight the virus – and in my best imagination – reinvent and improve the future of the country Unfortunately, reality is far more complicated than my dreams and hopes Instead, many factors have ignited the division

« We have so much more to learn and many more people to include in the conversation about how to do this. I still have hope that the election result will begin to realize our potential to move the United States forward – by building solutions to our common virus-fighting problems (and future public health issues) and rebuilding our economy by listening to our multitude of diverse voices I know it won’t be easy, but I hope compassion and understanding will make a difference for more fairness and progress Over the past decade, I have voted in almost every election – including some largely undisputed local elections For this spring’s election I posted postal ballots, and weeks ago I cast my early vote in a ballot box for the presidential election It appears that the rate of turnout will be higher than ever, and hopefully this will make the transition I imagine a reality «

« I am a proud Kenosha native who recently returned after living in Chicago for eight years As a former Double Demon at DePaul University, I am now a new specialist student and assistant instructor for the Gateway Technical College in Kenosha, Racine and Walworth counties

« To be honest the division has been a challenge for me I strive to hear from other perspectives with active and intentional listening, and I try to see and respect perspectives that are different from my own. I recognize that I have many forms of privilege, and many more It’s more than ever my time to listen and learn from others For me, this is the best coping mechanism right now with our national division

« As a permanent resident of Kenosha and Wisconsin, I am saddened by the negative press about our great state of Badger Wisconsin is a great place to live, work and travel, with many unique places, businesses and people and Specials Across the State While our state has its challenges, I think there are so many more good things and people who live in Wisconsin that remain unheard of due to the negative press recently. ”

« I was born and raised in Watertown on my family’s dairy farm I started farming full time in 2014 and am currently partnering with my dad at our dairy and farm called Simply Crazy Farms I grew up with very conservative values, and I would say this continued in my adult life, where I still have fairly conservative views My parents, especially my mother, are very active in the Republican Party of our riding

« When it comes to politics, I think every farmer would tell you the same: we need to understand the trade We’ve been seeing bad prices for years, and just when we think 2020 was going to be a productive year , COVID has happened and trade has been virtually shut down Government assistance programs have allowed us to survive the year, but it doesn’t solve the problem We want trade, not aid

« I’m really counting the days until the election is over I just want to forget all the hate, anxiety and division this election causes between my friends and family I want this country to remember who we are first Americans and then members of a political party «

« I was born in Milwaukee so technically I have been here for nineteen years. I am a student, an artist and maybe a political activist

« I think [the division] was natural to come For many Americans it is an election between good and evil, while for others it is the lesser of the two

« I think people realize how racist Wisconsin is I mean this is the ‘Far North’, and that was crucial in the last election and will be in this one »

« I honestly consider myself a ‘nomad’ or ‘stranger’ in our political narrative I know it’s more complex than our two-party system, but because of my faith and how I follow the path of Jesus , I’m having trouble having a simple online party vote

« At the local level, I wish to see considerable investment and attention from the leadership Choices were made that destroyed businesses, people’s health and parental trust in the school system Reclaiming trust and the integrity of our leadership is essential Across the country – probably not so far from the latter, but with the integrity of the leadership of the office – I would like to see a stronger, more accommodating immigration plan People who jump through all obstacles to come to this amazing country now have more restrictions and hard times We can do better to grow better as a nation

« Right now, [Wisconsin] is very poorly represented From the Jacob Blake shooting to protests, riots, other shootings, buildings set on fire, the media spent a day on the ground covering Wisconsin’s outside it may sound like a disaster – honestly it could be – but one thing I know to be true is that the people of Wisconsin, and Kenosha in particular, are fighters and forts. They don’t just give up and turn around People are fighting for their livelihoods and businesses Some are fighting for their rights, while others rightly sit down instead of fighting «

« For many years I thought that my only option was to identify myself as conservative or liberal As I became myself and my understanding of politics, I identify with more progressive ideals Deep down, I am a person who favors people and my political preferences tend to align with what will do most people good the most

« With the next elections, I would like to see depoliticized issues of humanity and the idea of political accountability come to the fore. Personal ideologies aside, party lines should not decide how people are treated Human rights, social justice and equity are not political What should be political is the responsibility of our leaders at all levels to work for their constituents and ensure transparency

« I try to focus on what I can control Sometimes it’s hard to know how a loved one came up with a belief or idea, and sometimes it’s as easy as questioning strangers on their day and to really listen

« I invest a lot more locally I have always been aware of local elections, but I haven’t spent much time to really think about how local elections set the scene for how whose national discourse appears in our community Now I find myself writing regularly to city, county and state officials «

« I have lived in Wisconsin for about four years now I moved here from Ethiopia when I was five Since I was a child I have been doing activism work I now work for a non-profit organization lucrative called 50 Miles More, a youth-led organization that works for black liberation and equality

« I think this revealed the underlying racism that has always existed but which progressive whites have tried to hide. I think I deal with this the same way I always did, not not trusting the story « I love black people »

« I think the response to COVID has been very revealing of how much this country and politicians do not value the POC, which has been disproportionately affected by this disease, both financially and physically. I think this pandemic is a testament to the amount of corruption and greed that plagues this country

« The idea that Wisconsin is a purple state, which the media constantly projects, completely ignores deep-rooted racism and voter crackdown on the black population of Southeast Wisconsin »

« My name is Jason Lopez and I have lived in Kenosha since 1991 I am currently Deputy Director of Black Lives Activists of Kenosha, which advocates for change in our community and other communities in Wisconsin and beyond My role as an advocate is to stand up for the vulnerable in my community against systemic racism and racial injustices In this upcoming election we have the opportunity to elect a president who best represents the people of our nation

« I cannot allow my children to grow up in the same culture of racial division and in an unjust capitalist society that was created to make the rich richer and the poor poorer August 23, 2020 will forever be in memories like the day Jacob Blake was shot seven times in the back by a Kenosha cop but I will always remember it as the day I decided not to stay away and people watch from my community to be treated as if their life does not matter

« It is so unfortunate how Wisconsin has been used by both sides as a political tool in the media to gain votes when so many have lost their lives and continue to lose their lives because of the pandemic and a broken justice system that has put the power to take life into the hands of the police, with little or no recourse for their actions «

« I’m a dairy farmer, blogger and mom to two little boys My husband and I and his parents milk 100 cows and farm on 300 acres I grew up in Madison and now live near Watertown

/ p>

« I am a moderate I think none of the political parties meet the wishes of the majority of Americans

« I hope we move forward after November in a way where we again see bipartisan legislation that is in fact beneficial to all. I’m so sick of partisan politics that removes all traces of common sense and common ground of politics

« I’m really tired of the fights, and it makes me withdraw from my friends and family Even though social media is a big part of what I do, I spend less time scrolling

« I’ve always been interested in politics and that hasn’t changed But I feel like instead of debating politics we are now focusing more on people than Biden and Trump C ‘is frustrating because politics is what we should be looking at, but it is also quite understandable that so many cannot get past the people we have to choose from «

« I am an Afro-Latina who attends the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for marketing and advertising I love creativity, color and fashion I try to implement these interests in all aspects of my life! I was born in Illinois but have lived in Wisconsin since I was three years old I am currently working as a Leaders Igniting Transformation (LIT) Fellow on my college campus As a Fellow I work with LIT for amplify young, like-minded, powerful and diverse voices to regain control of the future

« I know it’s hard to have a ‘perfect’ politician But one thing I learned from this election is that we are just as responsible for the future as any politician in office I want to see a change in who is in charge in an effort to create a future that will one day be led by a very inclusive, culturally ethical and determined president

« My political commitment has increased a lot I wouldn’t be lying if I said that when I was 18, I thought more about finally getting a tattoo than exercising my right to vote. However, my take on the vote made a full 180360 I now have a better understanding of the importance of voting – in every election I know a lot of people think their vote doesn’t matter As someone who was one of those people , I want to say this: maybe your vote will not make or fail the election, but it will influence it Think about your state of mind The state of mind that keeps you from voting Now think about all the other people who might think the same as you This irrelevant vote has grown into hundreds and thousands of people who think their vote doesn’t matter It’s a lot of voting power that’s not respected Your vote matters because you have the power to make it important Go vote! ● «
