European oil company Royal Dutch Shell closes Convent refinery in Louisiana as part of carbon reduction strategy

WASHINGTON – European oil company Royal Dutch Shell closes its Convent refinery in Louisiana as part of its strategy to reduce carbon emissions

The company announced Thursday that it will begin closing the plant, which employs nearly 700 workers outside of Baton Rogue, in mid-November

« The move is part of the company’s global strategy to invest in a set of uniquely integrated manufacturing sites that are also strategically positioned for the transition to a low-carbon future, » the company said in a press release

Shell announced this summer that it was trying to sell the facility, but had so far failed to find a buyer

Refineries are under increasing financial pressure around the world as demand for fuel drops during the coronavirus pandemic

Shell said it is working to consolidate its refining and chemicals business at six locations around the world, including Deer Park in Texas and Norco in Louisiana
