Week 5 of the NFL season kicks off Thursday night in Chicago, with the Bears hosting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tom Brady making the first of his five scheduled prime-time appearances in a uniform of Bucs this season
Both teams are 3-1 going into Week 5, but as the Bucs arrive in Chicago after three straight wins, the Bears suffered the first loss of the season last time around.
After a slow start, there are signs that Tom Brady’s bandwagon in Tampa Bay is starting to shift gears After looking rather rusty in the first three weeks of the season, the six-time Super Bowl champion rolled back the years in a 38-31 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, despite missing injured Chris Godwin and Leonard Fournette and losing parts of the game Mike Evans, LeSean McCoy and OJ Howard
Brady threw another six pick – he made four pitched interceptions in the first four weeks of the season, up from eight last season – but had 369 yards and five touchdowns and turned around to his Best level as Bucs eliminated a 17-point deficit, scoring the 28th time in the regular season and the combined playoffs, the veteran quarterback came back from a double-digit deficit to win a game – a record for the NFL
With the win, the Bucs improved to 3-1 for the season and remain ahead of NFC South ahead of the New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers, but the Bears’ defense could prove to be the toughest challenge Tampa Bay has faced far
The Bears defense ranks 9th in the league with just 52 yards allowed per game – with the Broncos best of any team the Bucs have faced so far – 11th against the pass – second best teams Tampa Bay have played so far after Carolina – and eighth in points allowed, making it the stingiest of any defensive unit the Bucs have encountered so far
Bucs also face growing injury toll Howard is sidelined for the season with an Achilles injury, while Fournette and McCoy did not practice on Tuesday, with Evans and colleagues wide receivers Chris Godwin , Justin Watson and Scotty Miller – which could make life more difficult for Brady, who died for 974 yards on an average of 3,247 per game, eight touchdowns and two interceptions for a 1,030 passer rating in three career starts at Chicago
The Bears, meanwhile, are much less certain as quarterback Chicago benched Mitchell Trubisky, who had won the first two games of the season, midway through the week three game against the Atlanta Falcons, giving the keys to the offense to Nick Foles Trubisky’s future had been in jeopardy since last season and Foles sparked a memorable comeback against Atlanta, leading Chicago to erase a 16-point deficit and a third straight win.
The Super Bowl LII MVP, however, looked much more subdued when he made his first start for the Bears on Sunday, as Chicago lost 19-11 to the Indianapolis Colts While the Bears’ defense remains among the best in the league, Chicago has failed to get things done on the offensive end of the ball with less than 20 points in 11 of its last 20 games.
