World Tsunami Awareness Day aims to reduce the scale of losses caused by natural disasters and save lives

New Delhi: World Tsunami Awareness Day is celebrated annually on November 5 with the aim of formulating strategies to save more lives for future disasters This year’s theme focuses on «  Sendai Seven campaign  » which aims to reduce disaster losses, improve disaster risk management and save lives

Over the past 100 years, 58 tsunamis killed more than 260,000 or on average 4,600 disaster deaths Most casualties were caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami The disaster resulted in the deaths of at least 227,000 people in 14 countries, including India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand, which have been the hardest hit

With each tsunami and subsequent destruction, many lessons have been learned and these lessons help us save many lives. Japan, with its bitter experience of frequent tsunamis, has become a leading country that has acquired expertise in implementing lessons learned from past disasters
