Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour has urged residents to keep calm and follow advice from health officials following the positive Covid wastewater test results.
The positive Pulgul sample was taken on January 5th. The website that serves Kawungan, Nikenbah, Scarness, Torquay, Urangan and Wondunna had returned negative samples in the weeks before.
Maryborough, which serves Aldershot, Granville, Island Plantation, Maryborough, Maryborough West, Oakhurst, St. Helens and Tinana, had positive results on samples collected on December 22nd and January 4th.
The sample taken before Christmas was delayed in transit and a negative sample was taken on January 5th. She had been negative the previous weeks.
Cr Seymour said the Fraser Coast Regional Council is determined to support Queensland Health as the lead agency in responding to Covid-19.
« It’s important to stay calm and stay informed. With today’s announcement, don’t panic. The chief health officer emphasizes that the community has no concerns, » he said.
“It is important that the virus fragment was discovered in the wastewater and has nothing to do with the quality of our drinking water. Our water is safe to drink, shower, and use for cooking or watering your garden.
« It must also be understood that standard wastewater treatment methods will kill the virus before it is released into the environment. »
On the Fraser Coast, fever clinics are located at Maryborough Hospital and in the parking lot near St. Stephen’s Hospital in Hervey Bay and are open 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. seven days a week.

Fragments of COVID-19 have been detected in sewers at four locations in Queensland, including two in the Fraser Coast area.
The state has nine new COVID-19 cases today, all acquired overseas and discovered in hotel quarantine.
Dr. Queensland chief health officer Jeannette Young said viral fragments of SARS-CoV-2 had been detected in wastewater treatment plants on Gibson Island (South Brisbane), Cleveland Bay (Townsville) and Pulgul (Hervey Bay) and Maryborough.
« This does not mean we have new cases of COVID-19 in these communities, but we treat these discoveries with absolute caution, » said Dr. Young.
« A positive sewage result means that someone who has been infected has rejected the virus. Infected people can shed fragments of the virus, and shedding can take several weeks after the person is no longer infectious. »
« Given the recent case of community transmission in Brisbane and the regular exposure of cases in other states, I urge anyone who is uncomfortable in these communities to be tested and isolated, » said Dr. Young.
« Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, tiredness, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, and loss of taste or smell.
« If there is a case that we are not yet aware of, it is important that we identify it as soon as possible through our test mechanisms in order to contain any possible spread. »
