World News – US – Authorities arrest after several people were shot dead in Bellevue

BELLEVUE, Neb. (WOWT) – Authorities said on 6 News they had taken into custody after a shooting late Saturday that injured several people at Sonic restaurant on Cornhusker Road.

The Omaha Police, Nebraska State Patrol, Papillion Police, and Sarpy County Sheriff’s Deputies were on hand to assist the Bellevue Police near 13th Street and Cornhusker Road after arriving at May 21. I received a call at 11 p.m.. m. BPD spokesman Andy Jashinske said at a press conference near the scene.

Several people were shot dead, but information about their condition was not yet available and authorities were still in the process of identifying and contacting family members, Jashinske said.

Witnesses also reported seeing a large fire in the area around the same time. Jashinske confirmed that there was a U-Haul truck on fire near the scene, which may have been « some fireworks display or some kind of device », but authorities are still trying to piece those details together.

The OPD bomb squad has also been called to the scene, he said. Authorities instructed people to stay away from the scene, which was cordoned off and expected to remain that way for some time while authorities worked to secure the area, he said.

A witness told 6 News that he stopped near the restaurant and around 9pm. Heard four or five pop noises at 8 p.m.. m. When he went to the restaurant, there were five or six more such noises, but he wasn’t sure if they were gunshots.

So far, authorities have not been actively looking for other people involved in the incident, Jashinske said, noting that he could not rule out the possibility that this could change as the investigation progressed.

Previously, a dispatcher from Sarpy County confirmed that BPD was calling the scene an « investigation into active shooters » and urging people to stay out of the area.

« It can happen anywhere, of course, this kind of situation that unfortunately happened here tonight, » said Jashinske.
