High winds and storms that ravaged central Michigan and the thumb area on Sunday caused electrical outages for tens of thousands of customers..

A DTE power outage map shows at least 20,000 customers along Interstate 69 in Lapeer and St. Clare counties, which extend into Thumb County as far as Cassville, Port Austin, and Harbor Beach.

Wind damage and fallen trees are the culprits behind most of the outages, according to the outage map.

Some of the hardest hit locations include 1,995 customers in the Capac and Riley Township regions in East Lapeer County and Southwest St.. . Clare County plus over 5,100 customers in and around Cassville, Huron County.

The outages have also reached mid-Michigan, with Consumer Energy reporting nearly 17,000 powerless customers across multiple counties including Bay (1148), Genesee (1,681), and Gladwin (1,228). ), Iosco (4310), Arenac (1539), Ogemaw (2,142), Saginaw (1,694), Midland (1,814), and Shiawassee (450).

Wind gusts accompanying thunderstorm lines reached 45 miles per hour at Bishop Airport in Flint as well as 46 miles per hour at H. W.. Brown Airport in Buena Vista and Huron County Memorial Airport in Bad Ax, according to the National Weather Service.
