Jimmy Garoppolo joined Drew Bledsoe as the only second former Patriots quarterback to beat his former coach on Sunday, leading the 49ers to a thunderous 33-6 win over Bill Belichick and New England at Gillette Stadium

It was a miserable afternoon for the Patriots, who never got a head start and couldn’t come close to 17 points in the second half Cam Newton was 9-for-15 for 98 yards and three interceptions Jarrett Stidham replaced Newton early in the fourth quarter and finished for 6 for 10 with 64 yards and one interception and one sack

As for Garoppolo, he wasn’t necessarily overwhelming, but he was more than effective in leading the Niners to their second straight victory

Patriots could blame last week’s sloppy performance against Broncos on a rash of injuries and lack of training time This week was another matter They’ve been groomed for success, with a steady week of preparation and veteran offensive linemen David Andrews and Shaq Mason return to the lineup

But that certainly didn’t help The Patriots, who lost their third straight – the longest losing streak for the franchise since the 2002 team suffered four straight losses – have never been in the game, especially after a 16-3 set in the second quarter that turned a 7-3 game in a 23-3 rash at halftime

The only bright spot could have been kicker Nick Folk, who threw field goals at 40 and 41 yards But the Patriots’ offense, which was shut out in the first quarter for the sixth straight game, couldn’t get much all afternoon

The defense wasn’t any better San Francisco didn’t kick until the end of the fourth quarter and at halftime they had more first tries than New England had total offensive plays The Niners averaged over seven yards per game and had roughly a two-to-one advantage in possession time.

7:03 pm: Julian Edelman got his first catch of the game, on a 13-yard Stidham pass in the first game after the two-minute warning

6:37 pm: Gould’s 32-yard basket is 33-6 with 13:37 left in regulation

6:34 pm: What are you looking for in times like this? Young guys who keep playing hard One of my favorite takeaways from that 2014 rash against Kansas City was seeing young guys like Garoppolo playing hard in the fourth quarter It certainly looks like there will be younger players – like Stidham – who are going to get some important snaps here in Q4. We saw it from Dalton Keene at the end of the third watch how they react to their time How do they react to the opportunity? Are they prepared? Do they know their missions? What is their level of competition? All things to consider now that the game seems out of reach

6:27 pm: Miserable afternoon for the Patriots continues as Cam Newton sees a tipped ball go for an interception, his third of the day He’s 30-6 with 4:47 left in the third quarter , and ended a practice that sparked some optimism (and included the first career catch for rookie tight end Dalton Keene) But the Niners will get the ball back on their own 31-yard line

6:22 pm: Want to know how things could get worse for the Patriots? Joe Thuney was apparently taken to the locker room Thuney had a 13-game streak in which he had played every moment of every contest this afternoon

6:17 pm: This is really something new We’ve seen the offensive wrestling here over the past year or so, but it’s the first time in a long time that I can remember seeing the Nova defense -England getting pushed around at home The Niners hit another with 7:32 left in the first half, and now it’s 30-6, San Francisco The Patriots are dominated up front, as the Niners offensive line has gone over two quarters. to push New England into the field Garoppolo was good, but it was the running game in San Francisco that made the difference The Patriots have no answers right now

6:08 pm: They got three, but with this kind of deficit in the second half, the field goal is not going to do it Folk connects on the 41 yards, and he’s 2-65-10: 48 in the third quarter There was a little offensive spark from the Patriots but now they have to build on it from here on out A stop and another score here would be a great place to start if you’re in New England

5:50 pm: Two quarterbacks are on the books at Foxborough, and the Niners are up, 23-3 Here are some remarks:

• There have been the worst offensive halves for the Patriots in the past 20 years I covered the team, but at the moment I’m having a hard time recalling them (Miami in 2002 and New Orleans in 2009 come to mind) I’m not sure there were many good for New England’s offense in the first two quarters – even when the Patriots were endowed with a semi-decent position on the field after Devin McCourty’s early interception, there was nothing more they could do than settle for a basket You could blame last week on injuries and the lack of training time This week? They were set for success, with a steady week of home preparation, and the fact that David Andrews and Shaq Mason were back in the lineup. It did not appear in the first two quarters

• N’Keal Harry suffered a head injury in the first quarter and his comeback is questionable It forced the Patriots to rely on their depth to a position where they were already dangerously skinny, at least when you speak receivers ready for the NFL

• None of this means the defense should be slack The Niners haven’t kicked in the first two quarters San Francisco has had more first tries (18) than the total number of games staged by the New England attack (16) San Francisco had 301 yards net, 127 rushing Garoppolo was certainly not statistically overwhelming, but was efficient in his decision making and was instrumental in helping revive what looks like growing to a rash

• One thing that could comfort the fans? The last time the Niners were at Foxborough, Colin Kaepernick and his team took a 31-3 lead in the first two quarters and more, but had to hold on as the Patriots mounted a furious comeback that was barely right. short Maybe this New England team has that kind of oomph this afternoon? We will see

5:46 pm: The interception was lousy, but the thing that should really worry you was how far back the defensive sent that one back I’m not feeling good about anything right now

5:40 pm: Put another one on the board Just a miserable start for New England It’s 23-3 with less than a minute to go in the half

5:29 pm: No offensive pace at all Poor throws from the quarterback, not enough pocket time and sloppy ball safety (fumble close to Jakob Johnson) Just a mess right now for the attack Patriots The defense is being asked to take on too much of a burden at this stage He’s 16-3 with 4:42 left in the first half

5:25 pm: Juszczyk goes up the middle to hit him, and he’s 16-3 (the extra point was not good) with 6:23 to go in the half I don’t know what else to say at this point – the Patriots offense can’t stay on the court and the defense hasn’t slowed down the Niners, especially the running game

Lawrence Guy, New England’s top interior lineman, squeezes his left leg as he is treated by #Patriots medical staff

5:18 pm: The Niners have more first downs (12) than the Patriots have offensive plays (11) with 8:13 left in the half

5:15 pm: Newton’s fifth interception of the season gives San Francisco a great field position – New England’s 38-yard line We’re suddenly looking at a very critical stretch for both teams – a touchdown could really give the Niners an early hammer on this one Meanwhile, the New England defense needs to keep San Francisco on a basket or less here He’s 10-3 with 8:46 left in the half

5:10 pm: I’m painting a picture here, but the Niners are doing some of the things that made the Patriots attacking successful in the first games of the season – namely, controlling the clock and tempo and keep the opposing defense on the field as long as possible (San Francisco has scored nine and 10 game records, respectively) The red zone defense has been good for New England, but the Niners have a good advantage when it comes to possession time – 16-5 during the game’s opening 21 minutes – which led to their early 10-3 lead with nine minutes to go in the half

5:06 pm: Dude, Juszczyk delivered a big hit on Jones in this race Just a crushing block as part of a nice response for the Niners

5:00 pm: Folk’s 40-yard basket goes 7-3 with 2:56 left in the first half Decent driving for the Patriots – better to get points than none Six plays, 30 yards and three dots

4:58 pm: The Patriots are on the move here as the first quarter comes to a close, but the opening frame ends with another scoreless stretch for New England Newton has three carries for 13 yards, and 2 for 3 for 9 passing yards He’s fourth and 6 at San Francisco 22 – the Patriots should get at least three here after Devin McCourty’s 28th career interception

4:51 pm: Pick by Devin McCourty sets the Patriots right – New England’s first takeaway of the day Personal foul pushes them back a bit, but let’s see if the Patriots offense can help take advantage and put some points on the board It’s 7-0 Niners with 2:02 left in the first quarter

4:43 pm: The Niners get the ball back with 7:12 left in the first quarter Newton went 2-2 for 9 yards on that first series – which was boosted by a bit of tempo – but at the end, Jake Bailey ended up pushing her back The defense is back on the pitch

4:34 pm: No shock there – as we told you on “Point After” on Friday, the Niners are one of the best teams in the league’s first quarter Regular Driving for Garoppolo and San Francisco, who only faced a third in the series Deebo Samuel is so good in space, and he showed it in the first practice with a pair of catches for 37 yards Patriots need to respond – they haven’t scored an offensive run in the first quarter of the season They can’t afford to dig too big a hole early on

4:25 pm: New England wins toss and defers Jimmy Garpoolo gets the ball first It’s foosball time!

4:20 pm: The only former Patriots quarterback who left New England who returned to beat Bill Belichick? Drew Bledsoe, in the 2003 opener

TE Dalton Keene makes his season debut as Devin Asiasi sits And the Patriots recover their offensive line Should be an intense racing day

3:55 pm: The Patriots are favored by three this afternoon, and the under-under is 445 (both via Odds Shark) At this point, with Andrews and Mason returning – and a week full of practice under their belt – New England looks good to cover Biggest key for the Patriots this afternoon? Throwing offense early New England doesn’t have a single first-quarter offensive point this season, a remarkable statistic that goes a long way towards explaining its losses to the Seahawks and Broncos. Patriots need to execute the attack fast – if they can do that they’ll cover I guess they’ll do it I say New England 28, San Francisco 21

3:38 pm: Excited to see what Dalton Keene might be capable of today I wrote about him, post-draft, here I still believe that in a regular year there is a possibility that he becomes a hero cult in New England for several reasons, not the least of which is because of this quote from his college post coach

« He’s very proud to be a badass, » said Virginia Tech tight ends coach James Shibest « Everyone called him ‘Rambo’ because of the way his body looked, his physique, the importance of this weight room to him. He blew our entire sideline a few times running over people – he’s not trying to dodge anyone And of course he had long hair too (in first and second year) so he really looked like a young Rambo «

3:30 pm: Good late October, football weather this afternoon in Foxborough According to our friends at meteocom, temperatures will be in the 40s with a light wind, but no chance of precipitation (Nothing like Denver) colder, but we’re still waiting for our first weather match of the season

3:24 pm: Think about a bunch of different possibilities along the offensive line, and this one might make the most sense (left to right: Wynn, Thuney, Andrews, Mason, Onewenu or Herron ( I’m guessing more the first than the second on the right tackle, but we’ll see) This would mark the fifth different OL combo in six games for New England A good group anyway, and definitely an upgrade over the past two weeks

3:15 pm: It is impossible to overstate how important the return of David Andrews and Shaq Mason is to the success of the offensive line and the offense in general I wrote about some of the impact of Andrews here on Friday’s Point After edition (subscribe to PA here), but his presence in the roster is massive and should create a ripple effect that will impact almost every layer of the lane. ‘New England attack That’s not to say we’re sleeping on Mason – especially as it relates to the running game – but with the two back, and a full week of practice, does a lot to set them up for success this week against San Francisco.

3:02 pm: The Patriots have announced their inactive Here’s the list, and this is what it means:

Defensive back Kyle Dugger: The rookie’s safety has been limited in training all week with an ankle problem, and has been deemed questionable for Saturday’s game It will be interesting to see how the Patriots replace him in roster – he was a hard-hitting defender early in his career

Quarterback Brian Hoyer: Veteran takes second straight healthy scratch – youngster Jarrett Stidham to serve as Cam Newton’s main replacement

Running back JJ Taylor: Mighty Mite Takes Another Healthy Scratch I’m a fan of Taylor – he provided an offensive boost against the Raiders and Dolphins earlier in the season as things dragged on La thought is Damien Harris has taken a lot of his reps at this point, but the Patriots are also pretty deep as a running back, so the rookie is basically the weird man at this point.

Devin Asiasi: Rookie is a healthy scratch However, this gives fellow rookie Dalton Keene the chance to possibly see his first action of the 2020 season

Defensive back Myles Bryant: Another healthy scratch – like running back Taylor, just a casualty of the staff, as the Patriots are pretty deep in the high school as well

As for who’s ready to go, this week will mark the return of center David Andrews (hand) and goalkeeper Shaq Mason (calf) Their presence up front should give the offensive line a big boost. New England and on the offensive as a whole Additionally, Keene, who has been inactive for the first five weeks of the season, is available for the first time this afternoon, giving the tight end a little more depth.
