Raleigh, NC – Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin put in place a curfew for all of Raleigh on Friday night to keep planned racial justice protests under control

A protest against a police shootout on a black man in Philadelphia was scheduled from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fayetteville Street, and a second was scheduled to begin around 7:30 p.m. at LeVelle Moton Park on East Lane Street

“Most people empathize with the whole equality issue and want to do something about it,” said Baldwin “[But] everyone still remembers May It’s hard to forget – our city center is still in recovery mode « 

The protests over the death of George Floyd in custody in Minneapolis at the end of May sparked days of protest marches across the country, and some in Raleigh turned violent, with protesters smashing windows, locating businesses and setting fire to law enforcement agencies used foam bullets and tear gas to break through the crowd

« Every time we protest against vandalism it makes people angry, » Baldwin said « What we want to see are peaceful protests We want to protect your constitutional rights, but we also want to respect others just like you want to be respected «

« We just said that (Friday) night there is a protest, and it was a black plane with a pumpkin on it, » said Debra Hison, who lives in historic Oakwood.

Hison said police stopped at her home Thursday morning to warn her of protests that could get out of hand.She said it was the first time she had seen Raleigh Police approach her for anything. thing like that and said she was planning to stay home
