The new series brings with it many royal secrets – including Queen Nerisa’s cousins and Catherine Bowes-Lyon.
Nerissa was born in 1919 and her younger sister Catherine in 1926, both daughters of the young aristocrat John Bowes-Lyon, brother of Elizabeth, who would later become Queen Mother.
It is believed that the sisters’ symptoms were the result of a genetic condition not in the Bowes-Lyon bloodline, but from his wife Fenella.
Catherine and Nerissa had three cousins with the same disabilities – Idonia, Rosemary, and Itildreda – that Vinela Harriet’s nieces.
The Crown looks at how the two sisters were recorded as dead and hidden from the world at the Royal Earlswood Foundation for Mental Illness – cruelly known as the National Refuge for Fools – in Redhill, Surrey, after they were born with learning disabilities.
They stayed there for most of their long life until Nerisa’s death at the age of 66 in 1986.
It is believed that she stayed in the institution until 1997, when it was closed amid abuse allegations, and then lived in another home in Surrey.
Although the sisters wear the standard establishment attire, they are allowed to change their clothing if they have visitors..
In Season 4, Princess Margaret is seen asking her friend, Reverend Dazzle Jennings, performed by Tom Burke, to visit their shelter.
When he returns, he tells her crying about the trinkets beside the bed showing their cousins from the royal family.
Season 4 is set in the 1980s and sees Princess Margaret, played by Helena Bonham Carter, gets angry when she discovers the sisters’ plight.
