Carson Daly, in a classic tuxedo, hosted the show, explaining why he and his colleagues thought Broadway was the perfect theme for this year’s costumes

« This year we’ve seen the lights go out on Broadway, but that is about to change The lights come on and the curtain will rise on a one of a kind show, certainly in a one of a kind year in its kind, « he said »A lot of us have been feeling down in recent months, but music is a great source of comfort and it’s one of the few things that has been able to connect us all, despite the distance. We take a moment to celebrate the stories, the scores and the songs that move us «

Sheinelle Jones and Dylan Dreyer were the first, dressing as Velma and Roxie respectively, as they performed a Chicago dance. Before their performance, the women received advice from Rita Wilson, who played the role of Roxie in the revival of Broadway in Chicago

Al Roker channeled King George III and Craig Melvin was Alexander Hamilton, as the couple were lip-synced with songs such as “You’ll Be Back,” “Alexander Hamilton” and “My Shot” from the hit musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda , Hamilton

« I was lucky to be there for the first time a chill ran through my back, » Roker remembers seeing the show « I picked King George because I feel royal I feel like I had to rule «

Jenna Bush Hager chose to go the feline route for her costume, performing Cats’ most iconic song, « Memories, » to the delight of her daughters, Poppy, 5, and Mila, 7

“Cats is a very special musical for me,” she said “It was the first musical we took Mila to Broadway My kids tried to teach me how to be the character They really did worked on my meows Poppy told me to whistle She taught me to whistle «

« I practiced this song when I was taking singing lessons in fourth grade Jenna in fourth grade wouldn’t believe I’m wearing the real Cats leotard from the Broadway show, » Hager added. « Being one of the cats most famous of all time is something I will never forget «

« We chose Wicked I love the idea that you think someone is bad, but you have to look a little deeper and maybe you will see another side Hoda is my girl! I am her Elphaba , this is my Glinda, « said Guthrie » I really wanted to be the wicked witch I’m a little nervous about the green face If I’m totally honest I think my kids will be terrified «

“I’ve never, ever been a princess-type person and pretty in Halloween costume,” Kotb admitted “Being Glinda the Good Witch is pretty amazing because you imagine that dress on Broadway You ‘imagine turning around You imagine Glinda walking through You imagine it all «

When it came time for the original Elphaba from Broadway to give Gurthie some advice on her performance, Idina Menzel said the role was « really about learning to harness my own power as a woman and not being afraid. of my ferocity »
