Throughout the offseason, Iowa fans wondered what the linebacker squad would look like without Djimon Colbert (disabled due to COVID-19), Kristian Welch (graduate) and Dillon Doyle (transfer) Second-year linebacker Jack Campbell was a player who needed to step up dramatically
The 6-foot-5, 243-pound player has been praised during the offseason for his commitment, growth and leadership on the pitch Unfortunately, his debut as a MIKE starting linebacker will have to wait until Iowa announces he will miss today’s game against Purdue due to an undisclosed illness, but that is unrelated to the COVID
Campbell has appeared in 11 games, mostly on special teams, but also got some action with the linebacker after Welch and Doyle got injured In his first year, Welch took Campbell under his wing and is a big reason Campbell felt ready to step up
“I feel like the biggest bright spot I got from last year was mostly seeing what I’m capable of,” Campbell said “But at the same time, the mental aspect to learn a lot more about football than just running for the ball like the X’s and the O’s Getting off lineups, trends and stuff like that Continuing that into this year has been one of the big positives and being able to know where the game takes place before the game happens, it has been very beneficial to me personally and to our linebacker »
Seth Benson is another guy who needed to take it to the next level On the Iowa pre-game radio show, it announced that Benson would also miss today’s game, but gave no reason
A few guys who might emerge as the weak side linebacker include Jestin Jacobs, freshman in red shirt, and Barrington Wade, senior in red shirt. Jacobs, the all-American high school student, was one of the nation’s most touted linebacker rookies
« Speed is her greatest asset Works great and is explosive like a blitzer and pass rusher Fluid and can get lean and keep blockers from giving her a sharp punch, » wrote Allen Trieu of 247Sports about Jacobs coming out of high school « Also does a good job with his hands when engaged Throws good for a kid who still has strength to add Plus a guy who shows up in high school but has the speed to excel at coverage, he just needs more reps out there Projects as a funder who can play to the limit in overshoot situations Should be a high impact varsity player
