After eight games in the first 16 days of the start of the season, the University of Tennessee may need a break in the Chattanooga women’s basketball program.
After the last game of the Mocs on Dec.. . 21, UTC was given an eight-day break between games, giving the coaching staff and team a chance to get together before the Southern Conference season began on Jan.. Recalibrate January. 9.
In between, however, there was a game against North Alabama on Tuesday, the last matchup outside of conference before the Mocs host the state of East Tennessee next week.
And – probably not by chance – UTC played Tuesday’s game against the Lions with more energy and more effort. They made shots, handled the ball and finished the first part of the schedule with a 77-64 win on the road to improve to 5-4 in the year.
Of all the positive statistics, none may show more than 17 UTC sales, a season low. That number has to keep falling, but it is certainly a step in the right direction – especially when you consider that the UNA likes to exert pressure and wreak havoc defensively.
Eboni Williams continued her solid game with 17 points, 12 rebounds and three steals. But she had help when UTC shot 49% off the field. Dena Jarrells had 13 points, four rebounds and four assists; Abbey Cornelius had 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and a pair of blocks.
Williams continues to be the catalyst for the Mocs, with efforts on both ends. Against the Lions, she scored a goal, eased the offensive, grabbed rebounds and even took charges. She plays with effort and passion – although this Tuesday backfired when she received a technician who said « Let’s go! » at UNA’s Jaila Roberts after a foul in the second half – and that is contagious for the team.
We already mentioned the 17 turnovers, but what was more important was the fact that the Mocs only made four mistakes in the second half. It matters because the shots weren’t fired in the second half, but if the ball wasn’t flipped then the Mocs had an opportunity to crash the offensive boards and create additional opportunities, resulting in an 11v12 try the free throw line led in the fourth quarter, winning one from UTC 24-16.
The Mocs only led 53:48 after three quarters, and head coach Katie Burrows started the fourth quarter with guards Sigrun Olafsdottir, Amaria Pugh and Morgan Hill. and forwards Williams and Cornelius. This unit prevailed against UNA 20-10 in the following 6:03 seasons and expanded the lead to 15 points, with 3:56 left.
The non-conference schedule gave the Mocs nine ways to find out a few things. They didn’t like some of those things – namely sales – but may be being fixed right now. Others, like the appearance of Williams as a focal point or the team’s general ability to hit the basketball, were welcome revelations. A season ago the team was 1-13 before it ran in the SoCon. This year’s team has always been better and the results are (slowly) showing.
