President Donald Trump’s attacks attempting to undermine the legitimacy of the election are particularly egregious, as what he complains about is just the long-established standard procedure for tallying the votes, Amber Phillips explained from the Washington Post in an analysis Monday
Trump’s main argument is that all votes should be counted on election night, but as Phillips points out, « the vote count was never completed in a modern presidential US on election night » and describes then in detail why it has never been
She pointed out that the Electoral College does not even meet until mid-December to officially vote, because « counting and formalizing these results takes time in every state, so much so that the federal electoral law gives states more a month after the election to count and certify their results «
She explains that postal votes always take a while to count, because there is more processing to do, and this election will be even more so, because the volume of postal votes is so high due to the coronavirus pandemic
She goes on to list other normal reasons that have existed for many elections why a vote can take a long time to count, such as voters being allowed to correct errors on their ballots and the counting of the ballots. provisional votes
Phillips then explains the normal procedure that has existed for many years in which once the ballots are counted there is canvassing followed by certification of the votes.
Plus, part of the process is that campaigns can sue on results, as Trump himself talks about doing, which could delay the whole process for additional weeks or more
