(CNN) – Widely used diabetes drug recalled after manufacturers found it contained unacceptable levels of a carcinogenic contaminant
Indian pharmaceutical company Marksans Pharma Limited is recalling extended-release metformin hydrochloride tablets because their levels of NDMA, a « probable human carcinogen, » were above the acceptable daily intake limit of 96 nanograms per day, according to a recall released this week by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
Metformin tablets are used to treat type 2 diabetes and are designed to lower blood sugar
The recall applies to metformin tablets between 500 mg and 750 mg, sold under the brand name Time-Cap Labs, Inc
The recall expands an earlier recall of the same product from this summer But this is just one of many metformin products that contain NDMA in the past year Seven other drug companies have issued recalls metformin hydrochloride prolonged release tablets due to their carcinogenic content
The FDA is still studying where NDMA comes from and how it ends up in metformin products Most of the levels found in drugs are generally low and are in line with the FDA accepted daily intake, but drugs recently recalled exceed this threshold However, Marksans Pharma Limited, India, did not disclose the amount of NDMA contained in its recalled products
The recall applies to the following products, which can be identified by their national drug code numbers listed below (National drug codes can be used to search and identify products online through the FDA) tablets are debossed 101 or 102 on one side and are smooth on the other
