The Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball team was back on the hardwood late Wednesday night to end their season against the Eastern Illinois Panthers. The two teams played in a close competition last year that followed a touching tribute to Howard Moore and his family.

This season, the Badgers came with much higher expectations and saw their first win of the year, albeit in a tight space, when Wisconsin took a 10-point win over Eastern Illinois.

And that’s it, folks. Go to bed! The #Badgers take care of Eastern Illinois 77 to 67. Nate Reuvers led all scorers with 18 points and nine rebounds.

At the start of the game, Wisconsin could go to Nate Reuvers, who was hot with seven of the team’s first nine points.

After the initial media timeout, two newbies, Johnny Davis and Ben Carlson, were promoted to the rating column on their first college-level game action. The duo looked good offensively and helped the Badgers to a 15:10 lead in the middle of the first half.

Wisconsin extended their lead in the final stages of the first half thanks to a 12-0 three-point run from Micah Potter and Brad Davison and some continued strong games from Ben Carlson.

The Badgers went into the break with a lead of 23 points and nine assists, keeping the EIU at just 23. 5% shoot.

The #Badgers lead in half with 43-20. Ben Carlson and Jonathan Davis with 16 points combined, while Nate Reuvers added 14 of his own points. Underwater shooting 51. 7% of the field and 81. 8% from the FT line.

In the early moments of the second half, a third freshman saw the field when the great Steven Crowl was the first off the bench.

While Crowl didn’t influence the game nearly as much as Davis and Carlson, the Badgers managed to maintain their distance from eastern Illinois on the way to the initial media timeout.

After the timeout, the Panthers were able to reduce the deficit after a 16: 3 run and a certain stagnation of the Badgers on the offensive. Tyler Wahl would give the team a nice boost and push the lead in Wisconsin back to 17 with 6:31.

In the final minutes of the game, the badgers turned to the bench and EIU was able to easily fill the gap.

Greg Gard made it clear at the beginning of the game that he has confidence in a couple of his newbies. Both Ben Carlson and Jonathan Davis entered the game shortly after the initial media timeout, and the boy made an appearance.

The duo ignited the team at both ends of the pitch in the first half. Both players scored eight points in the middle, immediately showing why they were in high demand for four-star prospects in high school.

As already mentioned, Steven Crowl was there in the second half with his first college minutes. A fourth newcomer, Carter Gilmore, also saw late minutes on mop-up duty.

One thing that stands out with the Badgers this season is the interchangeability Greg Gard has with his lineups. The team has a slew of senior executives and a youthful selection of talented options including Tyler Wahl, Ben Carlson and Jonathan Davis.

The starting line-up is made up of five seniors, and the group is a great length with two 6-foot-10 strikers in Potter and Reuvers and 6-foot-8 Aleem Ford serving as the minor striker. Tyler Wahl’s growth spurt to 6-foot-9 adds another long body to either play forward to spell Reuvers / Potter or Ford, and Ben Carlson is another 6-foot-9 striker who also takes the forecourt supported.

Gard moved these five players up and down against a shorter team from eastern Illinois. It will be interesting to see if Gard continues this this season as this added versatility could really help this team with the B1G’s tenacity this season.

The team was beaten 40 to 37 by Eastern Illinois, which gave this group an area of improvement it needed prior to the Big Ten game, but the length and flexibility that the rotation of the front court has is definitely a positive move.

Last season, all five Badgers starters averaged more than eight points per game against Eastern Illinois. Three of these players (Reuvers, Potter, Davison) were in double digits.

In the opening game, Wisconsin continued to have an even attack that spread the shots across many players.

Six different players attempted six or more shots against Eastern Illinois while three players (Reuvers, Carlson, and Trice) scored over 10 points.

On a team without a star player to rely on, Wisconsin needs constant production from the entire team to produce this season and meet high expectations.

Next up: The Badgers will be back in action against Arkansas Pine-Bluff on Friday. The delivery is planned for 8 p.m.. m. CST on BTN.
