The holiday season is just around the corner, and while it’s easy to get into the hustle and bustle of gift shopping for family and friends, it’s important to remember that there are tons of incredible charities out there that do something too Need love, maybe this year more than ever.

That’s why we’ve asked our own patch staff to recommend organizations that are close to their hearts. Whether you’re looking to support a killing-free shelter, fund cancer research, donate to a food bank, or discover a new charity, you are sure to find a worthy organization on this list.

What makes the charity unique are the large-scale head shaving events. Every year people raise money for the charity and then come together to have their heads shaved in solidarity with children with cancer. I’ve donated and shaved my head for years and it’s so fun and a great community activity. « 

« Times are difficult even for children in safe, loving and caring homes. Foster children have an even more difficult road. The CAFAF Children’s Hope Fund is helping them with this fundraiser. « 

« The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a not-for-profit organization founded in the United States that helps fulfill the wishes of children with critical illness between the ages of two and a half and 18 years. I am a current volunteer for this non-profit organization.

I am proud to volunteer for this organization because I have the opportunity to fulfill the wishes of many children in my community who are coping with life-threatening diseases. Even if these wishes only briefly help distract these desired children from the serious health problems they are grappling with. These desires give them something to look forward to and serve as an escape from reality.

In the past, I have surprised the children of my dreams with a trip to Disney World. I made sure children meet famous motorists and even fulfilled the wish of a teenager fighting cancer who wants to meet his grandparents for the very first time living in Japan.

These children and families go through so much and it is very inspiring to watch a child’s will to survive and persevere through illness. I admire their strength and courage. « 

« Paterson Healing Collective, Passaic County’s first violence intervention program, is making Paterson and other areas of the county safer by teaching first aid and providing resources to communities affected by violence. Within a month of the initial training session, a young man who was shot ran to his block for help and the community acted. « 

« The Venice Family Clinic serves thousands of people across Los Angeles County, including the Venice, Santa Monica, Culver City, and Marina del Rey communities. The nonprofit, through its food bank, supports vulnerable populations throughout the pandemic as well as health care, mental health and work-related resources.

Many people in the region have lost their jobs. others are homeless or live on their cars. The organization worked hard to help people before the pandemic, but has expanded its services even further in this emergency. They have partnered with other community organizations, including the UCLA restaurant, to create meals for families who need them. They even added another location in Culver City this year.

Now more than ever, they need community support and invited me to join them on Tuesday morning at 8 a.m.. m. for their grocery bank on Pico Boulevard in Santa Monica. Community members are invited to volunteer. « 

« I worked as the head of the AmeriCorps youth crew at MCC in 2011. They engage young people in the west for practical nature conservation work in national parks and forests and at the same time impart skills in the hinterland and environmental education. They have extensive contacts with low-income and Indian communities. Staff, volunteers, and youth crew members emerge from these transformative experiences with a sense of freedom to choose to make change and a strong appetite for public service. « 

« The Lamb Center is a day care center in Fairfax, Virginia that continues to provide vital services to the homeless during the pandemic. It worked with local governments to run a homeless employment program that changed the lives of participants and even helped some find full-time jobs. I’ve covered quite a bit of them and I am amazed at the way they help the homeless with both physical and mental needs. « 

« My family has adopted several cats from Atlanta Humane, and I’ve volunteered here. The volunteers and staff are patient and friendly, and help families choose the perfect pet for their home. I am very grateful for what Atlanta Humane is doing for evacuated pets, including taking in and adopting animals affected by hurricanes in Florida. It is clear that the volunteers really care for and love the animals. « 

« MercyOne Hospice is run by nurses and volunteers who serve end-of-life patients and their loved ones. Hospice workers, from nurses to chaplains to nursing technicians, visited my mother every day when she was in her care with terminal lung disease. These visits made it more convenient for her to check whether she was receiving morphine as prescribed or to have a technician help her bath and manicure. The chaplain made sure that Mama received communion and the anointing of the sick sacrament from a priest every week to give her peace. The staff answered our questions day and night; Your commitment is second to none. « 

« Amid the ongoing economic downturn, no-kill animal rescues are struggling. This particular rescue takes in all kinds of creatures and I have never heard a bad word about them. Very dear to my heart. « 

« I am the parent of an LGBTQ teen who is also struggling with anxiety and depression. Every day, kids like him have an incredible responsibility, working to find out who they are and what adults they want to become, while at school they are faced with bullies, unsupportive family members and friends, and the judgment of those who know better should. Every day I see my child’s struggles and every day I worry about him. While we do everything we can to love and support him, not everyone does. And not every child has a support system like his. This is why organizations like The Trevor Project are so important. « 

« Maureen’s Haven, operated under the auspices of the Peconic Community Council in Riverhead, is a homeless program in the East End of Long Island that runs from November to 1 every year. April runs. Homeless in the Hamptons? It’s hard to believe, but very, very true – and the program has continued to grow. Local places of worship house the homeless on different evenings of the week. The homeless get on a bus and are taken to the place of worship, where volunteers cook them warm, nutritious dinners and offer them breakfast and a packed lunch. Volunteers also sleep to make sure the homeless are safe overnight.

The program means a lot to me because I have volunteered in my church for nine years and have seen firsthand the need for the homeless, not just for food and shelter, but also for dignity and compassion. As important as the meals were the conversations at the dining table as the homeless shared their stories and made connections. It’s literally a life-saving program and I’m proud to have volunteered for so long. « 

« In a year when seniors were stranded in nursing homes with no visitors, this would brighten their vacations. « 

« The Monterey County’s food bank is based in Salinas, California – one of the most important agricultural centers in the state known to many as the » Salad Bowl of the World « because it produces so much salad we consume. But despite the great agricultural abundance here, many of the same farm workers who put food on our tables are starving.

According to the food bank, this organization works to feed food-insecure farm workers and residents of the district, where one in four people is hungry. The Food Bank for Monterey County announced that it produces more than 100 each year. Serves 1,000 people and works with 160 local nonprofits to stock pantries and run menu programs and food distribution outlets. « 

« This is a great charity that helps the families of pediatric cancer patients and the patients themselves. I heard about it from a good friend who has volunteered for the organization for years and seen firsthand the powerful impact they have on families and what they do to bring them closer together. «

I’ve been (now friends) with people with IDD. Almost every city and several schools have a Best Buddies program, and you will learn so much and make great friends in return. « 

« Impact Austin is an Austin-based women’s collective donation organization that funds nonprofit organizations in central Texas providing service in Travis, Williamson, Bastrop, and Hays counties. Impact Austin combines donations from its members to provide multiple grants each year to local, member-selected charities. As the son of a woman who was widowed at the age of 48 when my father died of cancer and the brother of three sisters, women empowering groups resonate strongly with me. « 

« The Kennedy Center offers many services for people with disabilities. The center also helps people with disabilities develop professional skills and find employment through a range of programs. « 

« On Main Street in Stratford, Connecticut, an imposing mansion is enjoying a second life as a community center. For nearly 90 years, Sterling House has provided vital services to families in the city. Today the center offers a pantry and free meal distributions, as well as a wide range of courses, programs and sports. «

« The Santee Food Bank is something very special to me. My mom helped start it and they have been around since 1983. Most of the volunteers are seniors, like my mother, and they have continued to serve the community amid the coronavirus pandemic. « 

« This organization has stepped up to help the homeless in Ocean County and fill a void that the county government has barely acknowledged existed. They provide emergency shelters during Code Blue, but it’s more than just protection: they help people work their way out of homelessness, whether they’re supporting them in their struggles against addiction, helping them find work, or giving them a place to live. where they can talk about what they are doing I stand in front and feel safe doing it. They help children with distance learning and have a wonderful Christmas event that we cover annually. I’ve seen people’s lives changed through this organization and it’s a pleasure to tell their stories. « 

« The Chad Tough Foundation is raising awareness about DIPG, a rare form of childhood cancer. The foundation is named after Chad Carr, the son of Tami and Jason Carr, who live just outside Ann Arbor, Mich. and who died at the age of 5, less than two years after he was diagnosed with DIPG, which is incurable – which makes the work of Chad Tough important as researchers work to find a cure for this terrible disease. « 

« This organization is entirely dependent on local donations and is not funded by national organizations such as the SPCA and the Humane Society. She takes in some of the animals most in need, and raises veterans and donations to heal them, such as the dog who was burned to most of its body after its owner poured light fluid over it and set it on fire. She is now cured, has been adopted, and is a therapy dog. «
