EAST RUTHERFORD, N. . J. . (CBSNewYork / AP) – The New York Giants won and then waited – hoping for a decisive victory from a bitter rival.

Far from it . 500, but still hopeful, the Giants faced an unprecedented playoff spot with six wins with a 23:19 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday and locked it up when rookie Xavier McKinney Andy Dalton in the end zone with 1 intercepted: 15 left.

New York’s postseason chances were dependent on Philadelphia beating Washington later on Sunday, but the Eagles lost 20-14.

The Giants (6-10) would have reached the playoffs for the first time since 2016 and would have earned their first NFC East title since 2011 had it gone the other way. They would also have been the first team to qualify for the playoffs with six wins in a 16-game regular season and the first to do so after starting 1-7.

Hardly like trainer Joe Judge planned for the first year, but there were no complaints about adding at least a couple of hours to the season.

« It shows that we as a team have grown a lot all year round in terms of bare metal and strength, » said Judge. “I mean, I think that’s been showing up all year. And I keep saying that with 0: 5, 1: 7 I found out a lot more about our team than on the track. ”

Dallas (6-10) almost tore the satisfaction away. Dalton rallied the cowboys with a bloody left hand after being attacked by Leonard Williams as a defender in the third quarter, and he had Dallas on his doorstep when Williams came closer again.

Dalton crawled around in a broken game, avoiding being fired by Williams for the fourth time, but hovering one in the middle of the end zone. McKinney caught it easily, his first career interception.

Jones was efficient and surprisingly mobile after slumped with injuries to his left ankle and right Achilles tendon in a three-game loss. He was 17 of 25 and passed for 229 yards and two touchdowns, ending Dallas’ seven-game winning streak in the rivalry.

Dalton was 29 of 47 for 243 yards and had a cut on the hand after the game. He was sacked six times and the Cowboys ended a three-game winning streak that nearly drove them to the playoffs in Week 5 despite the injury to star quarterback Dak Prescott at the end of the season.

« It’s obviously been a year of ups and downs, » said manager Mike McCarthy during the first year. « Trials and Tribulations. In a way, this game is a microcosm of our season. ”

Dalton and the Dallas offensive only had 34 yards by the middle of the second quarter but started moving the ball just before half-time. They drove 56 yards in the third quarter to set up Ezekiel Elliott’s 1-yard TD run, and Dalton overcame the hand injury on the next drive to hit Greg Zuerlein’s 36-yard field goal, New York’s 20- 19 shortened.

Graham Gano scored a 50-yard field goal for the Giants the next time they had possession. Gano overtook Josh Brown for the franchise record when he was 30. Field goal in a row.

Limited to 26 points in the last three games, the Giants’ offensive ended in 31st place with 239 yards and 20 points in the first half. Jones had TD passes of 10 yards to Sterling Shepard and 33 yards to Dante Pettis.

Shepard also achieved his first career as a TD, a 23-yard reverse on the game’s inaugural drive. After dragging his way into training this week from an injury, he finished the race with eight catches for 112 yards.

Dalton and the Dallas offensive were a mess early on but were brought into position by Zuerlein for two field goals in the second quarter, including a 57-yarder in the final game of half.

Wayne Gallman Jr. from New York. seemed to be fumbling after being the first to win a game in the last minute, but officials decided he was down before the ball came loose. The judgment was confirmed by repetition.

Elliott won 42 yards on 14 carriers and finished the season with 979 yards, just under 1. 000 for the second time in his five NFL seasons. Elliott has dealt with hamstring problems this season, and he said he did load a quad in training this week as well.

« We’re upset that we didn’t do what we needed to put ourselves in a situation we could get into, » he said. “Annoyed with the outcome of this game. ”

Cowboys: Dallas forced two sales and had 12 takeaways in the last four games. It had 11 in the first 12 games. … Zuerlein scored four field goals and has 34 for the season, which is Richie Cunningham’s 1997 franchise record.

Giants: Williams had seven tackles, three sacks, and hit the quarterback five times. He finished the season with 11 1/2 sacks. … Shepard had two touchdowns all season before Sunday.

Cowboys: WR Noah Brown was disqualified at halftime with a back injury. TE Blake Bell went stinger in the third quarter and was likely to return.
