Sweet potato pie is a staple for Anthony Anderson’s family – and not just over the holidays.
« I grew up eating it every holiday – Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years. Sometimes they just baked it on a Sunday. And it’s going back as far as I can remember, « the 50-year-old black-ish star told Us Weekly exclusively. “Of course the recipe has been passed on over the years and then you find things to add and put your own spin on it. But at its core, it’s still the recipe we grew up with. It’s part of the family. ”
The recipe is so popular that his family created a string of text after no one brought it during a (terrible) gathering.
« We didn’t have a sweet potato cake for a year because every other family member thought the other family member would bring the cake. So we made a vow that would never happen again. And then, the next year, everyone brought a sweet potato tart. So now we’re on the family thread, ”added Anderson. « Every vacation, » OK. Who will bring the cake? OK, who is doing the backup? « That’s how we are now. That’s how seriously we take our sweet potato pie dessert. ”
So important that the Emmy nominee recently partnered with McCormick to play a prank on loved ones. Using some of the company’s spices, he tested their knowledge of whether they could taste the difference between their traditional recipe and a regular sweet potato pie.
« I come from a family of jokes and jesters and we do things like that all the time. That was fun. Usually the family tries to play pranks on me so it was great to get them back, ”Anderson told us. « To be able to sit there and talk about a family recipe we’ve had in the family for years – sweet potato tart is our favorite. And to make it with that seasoning factor and watch the family and you sit back and see if they’ll be honest about the taste. And second, if you’re honest, how bad are you going to ridicule me for it? And then I come and say, “It was just a joke. Here is the real cake. ’”
Anderson will revisit dessert during Thanksgiving, but his meeting will be much smaller this year given the ongoing pandemic.
« It looks very different. Everyone is very careful about exposing themselves to people and unfortunately we are in this pandemic right now. So it will be interesting to see how we gather together as a family over the holidays, ”he said. « Our kids are out now, so we’re empty nests, but I’m not sure how and what we’re going to do. It is definitely different from previous years. We’re definitely not going to have 30 or 40 people [as usual] in my house – I’ll tell you that. But there will be some kind of little gathering that I hope the family will do. Just to keep that tradition alive. ”
Even so, he will most likely be in the kitchen cooking alongside his cousin Christopher, who is a sous chef.
“I’m not claiming to be the best chef or celebrity chef out there, but I can assert myself. When we have events or the holidays come, everyone comes to my house, ”Anderson told us. « He’s going to make the sauces because I haven’t perfected that yet. He’ll make the sauces and I’ll do all the other things and he’ll help me along the way. ”
