President-elect Joe Biden is expected to name the former Michigan governor. Jennifer Granholm, as head of the Department of Energy, sources familiar with the decision confirmed ABC News Tuesday.
Granholm, 61, a former two-term governor and first female executive director of Michigan, was first elected to lead Wolverine State in 2002 after serving as attorney general from 1999 to 2003. If Granholm were approved by the Senate, he would only be the second woman to head the energy department and the ninth woman Biden has nominated for his cabinet so far.

Biden and Granholm have a long history together. The former governor stood in for then-Alaska governor and Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin during his debates when he was Obama’s supporter in the 2008 presidential election.
A source familiar with the transitions pointed to Granholm’s work with Biden in Michigan during the 2009 recovery that saved the U.. S.. . Auto industry and led to investments in green energy jobs in the state – something Biden’s ambitious infrastructure plan also wanted to invest in.
Granholm is well known and well-positioned to tackle the country’s current challenges, according to the source based on years of leadership experience.
Granholm is currently an adjunct professor of law at the University of California at Berkeley and was governor of Michigan when the Obama administration bailed out the auto industry after the 2008 financial meltdown. Since then, he has been a vocal advocate of expanding American development of electric vehicles.
A Biden transition officer did not respond to a request for comment on Granholm’s possible nomination.
