MANILA, Philippines – Meralco Bolts relied on an impressive performance from veteran Reynel Hugnatan, who escaped with an 83-80 win over Barangay Ginebra in the fourth game of the PBA Philippine Cup semi-finals on Wednesday in the Stay alive ON the sports arena and in the cultural center.
After wasting a 15-point lead at the beginning of the third quarter, the Bolts were able to bounce back in the final volley to keep their streak alive.
In the final moments of the fourth quarter, a pivotal defensive freeze against LA Tenorio was embroiled in a back and forth affair that saw Meralco get the ball, where Reynel Hugnatan scored a dagger to field his team and hers Extend stay in the bladder 81-80.
Under the leadership of Cliff Hodge, the Bolts got the game off to a strong start and at halftime they had a lead of 13 points (44:31).
But a third quarter, in which they scored 33-16 points, turned the tide in the direction of the Gin Kings.
The Bolts didn’t bother to get into the final volley, however, and opened the fourth with an 8-2 run to regain the lead at 68:66.
On a back-and-forth affair, both teams exchanged baskets and it was the bolts that came out victorious.
It took Hugnatan’s dagger and Raymond Almazan’s defensive hold against Stanley Pringle to keep Meralco’s season alive.
Chris Newsome then brought the ball to the other side to put the icing on the cake with a layup.
For the Gin Kings it was Pringle who took the lead with 18 points.
