Dec. . Nov 11, 2020 – Researchers from the University of Bristol and quantum start-up Phasecraft have advanced quantum computing research and brought practical hybrid quantum classical computing one step closer.

The team, led by Bristol researcher and Phasecraft co-founder, Dr. . Ashley Montanaro has discovered algorithms and analysis that significantly reduce the quantum hardware capability required to solve problems beyond the realm of classical computing, even of supercomputers.

In the article published in Physical Review B, the team shows how optimized quantum algorithms can solve instances of the infamous Fermi-Hubbard model on short-term hardware.

The Fermi-Hubbard model is fundamental in condensed matter physics as a model for highly correlated materials and as a way of understanding high temperature superconductivity.

Finding the ground state of the Fermi-Hubbard model has been predicted to be one of the earliest applications of short-term quantum computers, and to provide a pathway to understanding and developing novel materials.

Dr. . Ashley Montanaro, Head of Research and Co-Founder of Phasecraft: “Quantum Computing has important applications in materials science and other areas. Despite the great advances in quantum hardware of late, we may still be a few years away from having the right software and hardware to solve significant quantum computing problems. Our research focuses on algorithms and software optimizations to maximize the capacity of quantum hardware and bring quantum computing closer to reality.

“Short-term quantum hardware has a limited device and computing size. Phasecraft used new theoretical ideas and numerical experiments to put together a very comprehensive study of various strategies for solving the Fermi-Hubbard model, focusing on strategies that are likely to have the best results and impact in the near future.

Lana Mineh, a PhD student at the Faculty of Mathematics and the Center for PhD Education in Quantum Engineering, who played a key role in the research, said, “The results suggest that optimization over quantum circuits with gate depth is much less more than a thousand could be enough to solve instances of the Fermi-Hubbard model that are beyond the capacity of current supercomputers. This new research shows promising prospects for generating the ground state of the model on short-term quantum devices and improves previous research by about a factor of 10. ”

Physical Review B, published by the American Physical Society, is the top journal for solid state physics. The research paper, examined by experts, was also selected as a suggestion by the editorial team and appears in the physics magazine.

Andrew Childs, Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Department of Advanced Computing Studies at the University of Maryland: “The Fermi-Hubbard model is a major challenge in condensed matter physics, and the Phasecraft team has taken impressive steps to show how quantum computers could solve it. Their work suggests that circuits of surprisingly shallow depth could provide useful information about this model and make it more accessible to realistic quantum hardware. ”
