« We had at least one very major explosion and a working fire at the facility, » said Kent Carper, Kanawha County officer Tuesday night after the explosion was reported around 10pm local time.
We believe it was likely caused by a barge in the facility’s river basin.

While it remains unclear whether volatile chemicals were involved in the explosion, Carper passed reports that the smell of chlorine was present at the site but said he could not confirm it.
According to a Kanawha County media release, the protection order is only in effect for a two mile radius of Belle’s Chemours chemical plant. This includes all of Belle as well as other nearby towns like Marmet, Chesapeake and Chelyan, local media reported.

The Chemours Company, a spin-off from the chemical company DuPont, issued a statement shortly after the explosion saying that an unspecified « incident » at the facility « caused a fire » and that » Rescue workers ”worked to contain the flame, which offers no further details. No explosion was mentioned in the statement.

The cause of the explosion has not been determined and it is not yet known whether injuries have occurred at the facility, which is located right next to the Kanawha River.
At around 11:30 am local time, a district official told reporters that the situation at the plant was « now stabilized, » adding that rescue workers were « looking for debris » and that the order would hopefully be lifted soon.
