The comedian, former Saturday Night Live writer and sometimes 19th century philosopher. At the beginning of the 20th century, John Mulaney started a 60-day rehab program for alcohol and cocaine addiction, reports the New York Post.
Mulaney has been open about his previous struggles with sobriety in both his interviews and critically acclaimed stand-up specials. « I don’t drink », he joked in 2012 in « New in Town ». « I used to drink, then I drank too much and had to stop. That surprises a lot of viewers because I don’t look like someone who used to do something. «
In an interview with Esquire in 2019, he told writer Jonah Weiner that he was drinking for attention.
« I was very sociable and at 12 I wasn’t, » he said. « I didn’t know how to act. And then I drank and was weird again . . . Then I tried cocaine and loved it. I wasn’t a good athlete so maybe it was a young male thing from This is the most physical achievement I can do. Three vicodins and a tequila and I’m still standing. Who is the athlete now? «
According to Weiner, Mulaney was able to determine the day he stopped using cocaine in August 2005 and the day he stopped drinking in September. He was 23 years old.
«. « It was just crazy . . . I haven’t killed or attacked anyone. But yeah, I said, ‘You are out of control. ‘And I was like,’ I don’t like this guy anymore. I am not rooted for him. ‘ »
« Unfortunately he’s struggling again during the pandemic, » they said. « He’s on board with his recovery, he’s not fighting rehab. «
In early December, Mulaney alluded to some of the effects of the pandemic on his mental health in an appearance on « Jimmy Kimmel Live! », which he recently collaborated on. He described how he could not thrive without the structure of a routine.
« During the quarantine, I said, ‘Why am I going completely crazy and why am I suddenly telling my own wife about my accomplishments?' » he said. « I really needed a job. First, I like having a boss and getting things done. If I’m responsible for something, not so much the best. «
He said his psychiatrist supported the move. « She said to me, ‘Without an external structure, I have no confidence in you. ‘ »
Mulaney hosted « SNL » for the fourth time in October, which meant a couple of successful years for the comedian. He is the voice of Andrew Glouberman on the hit Netflix series « Big Mouth », which has just premiered its fourth season. In June, he announced a deal with Comedy Central for two new comedy specials, both of which will be the sequel to « John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch, » Mulaney’s comedy special for children that was released on Netflix last December. It has also been announced that he will perform with Andy Samberg on an upcoming reboot of Disney’s « Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers ». «
