Connie Chung – the former ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN host – did an insightful new interview.
According to colleagues, the journalist spilled the beans behind the scenes of the tension with colleagues like Diane Sawyer, Barbara Walters and Dan Rather.
She also touched on her seemingly flirtatious relationship with David Letterman and how she ruffled Hugh Grant’s feathers during her cameo on HBO’s most recent hit, The Undoing.

On Andrew Goldman’s “The Originals” podcast for Los Angeles Magazine, Chung said that working with Rather at CBS was like a psychological scene, while her treatment at ABC with Walters and Sawyer “was no different from Tonya’s Harding to Nancy Kerrigan. ”
She also said of Letterman, « Out of the air, it’s dark » and remembered getting the « evil eye » from The Undoing director Susanne Bier.
Chung, 74, began her career in the 1970s as a CBS Evening News correspondent before joining NBC and finally returning to CBS as a co-anchor with Rather in the 1990s.
But while Rather was outwardly “a very Texan gentleman,” she said to Goldman, “If I turned around, I would feel like I was in a scene of Psycho in the shower. ”
Later: “When I went to ABC News, I teamed up with both Barbara Walters and Diane Sawyer and thought, ‘Oh, this is going to be great. There will be three women who get along. ‘”
Instead, she found a scene “no different from what Tonya Harding did to Nancy Kerrigan” because “when I got to ABC, both Diane and Barbara were in the same arena to get those big interviews. When I tried to run after them I was told I couldn’t. That Barbara and Diane were the only ones who could apply for the interview and I had to resign. And I said, « Really? »
She pissed off the ABC apple cart through a 2001 interview with Rep. Gary Condit on the disappearance of intern Chandra Levy.
During Chung’s career, she became one of Letterman’s favorite guests, and fans felt there was chemistry between the late-night show host and the anchor, who has been happily married to Maury Povich since 1984.
« I had this thing for him and he had a thing for me, and I really think it was inexplicable in that regard, » she said of Letterman on Goldman’s podcast. « And yet I really had nothing for him. You know what I mean? « She continued, » I love people who have a sense of humor and are charming, and he was when he was in the air. ”
But « From the air it’s dark . . . he’s a dark, unhappy kind, I don’t mean he’s unhappy. He’s a kvetch. He is a Goyishe Kvetch. ”
Chung, who left the news game in 2006, plays an interviewer grilling Grant’s character on the new series The Undoing but told Goldman that she upset the star – and the director.
« When Hugh Grant sat down, he looked wrinkled. He’s one of those wrinkled Brits, ”Chung said on the podcast. “And his tie was crooked and I’m very OCD. So I said, “Hugh, straighten your tie. « And he goes and fixes it. And then there was a collar outside his suit. And I said, ‘Hugh, fix this. « And then he looked like Rodney Dangerfield. It should sit on the back of your jacket – as in Broadcast News – so it is nice and neat. ”
But when Chung Grant wanted to give this tip: « He says, » Now what? « she told me, adding that beer » to me . . . gives a dirty look as if « What the hell are you thinking about? » do you? ‘”
(Chung doesn’t mention beer by name, but calls her « the Danish director ». Bier directed all six episodes of the series and is from Copenhagen. )
Chung said of Grant, “He wasn’t very kind. I interviewed him right after four weddings and a funeral for his next film. When I saw him I said, “Oh, hi. I interviewed you . . . do you remember? « And he said, » No.. « So I went, » OK « . . . I thought he was going to get into his acting zone, whatever that is. ”

Goldman also interviewed Michael J on The Originals podcast. Fox, Steve Madden, Joan Collins, and others.
The report on page 6 follows previous reports that Chung said she had « gone through hell » in her journalistic career dealing with discrimination while covering big stories.
