World News – USA – COVID forces NYCFC to borrow for CCL

. .

New York City FC have loaned Orlando City goalkeeper Mason Stajduhar after complications with COVID-19 under-staffed the team ahead of Wednesday’s CONCACAF Champions League quarter-final second leg against Tigres, the club announced.

The move was required due to the fact that three NYCFC players tested positive for COVID-19 while a fourth, goalkeeper Sean Johnson, was considered close contact and was not traveling to Orlando for the game.

« I am sad to say that I will not be joining the Orlando team as I have been given close contact with one of the players who recently tested positive for Covid, » Johnson said on Twitter. « I have tested negative so far and hope to continue to do so. «

The positive tests have also changed NYCFC’s travel plans with the team departing on Tuesday morning. NYCFC follows Tigres 1-0 from the first leg, which was withheld in March, but the competition was then stopped due to the pandemic. The remaining CCL games will be held at a neutral location in Orlando to end the competition by the end of the year.

NYCFC manager Ronny Deila told reporters that backup keeper Luis Barraza will take Johnson’s place on the grid and that Stajduhar will be available in the event of injury.

« Luis has been fighting to stay close to the team for two years and I am very happy that he now gets a chance, » said Deila. « He’s talented, young, he worked really hard and now the time has come and we’re looking forward to the game to see how Luis does. I am very confident that he will have a good game. «
