ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Memphis hit a deficit and won for the fifth time this season when the Tigers overtook the Navy 10-7 on Saturday night at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
Memphis (6-2, 4-2 American Athletic Conference) were 7-0 down before the game ended with a 14-yard touchdown from Brady White to Calvin Austin III at 3:52 in the opening quarter.
The game stalled until placekicker Riley Patterson scored a 26-yard field goal with 10:53 in the fourth quarter.
One of the biggest games in the game came from Redshirt newbie Cole Mashburn when he made a mistake in the first game of the fourth quarter to score Patterson’s game-winning field goal. Mashburn had a career high nine tackles.
Defenders Quindell Johnson and Sanchez Blake led Memphis in 12 tackles each. Johnson also had an interception and Blake forced fumbling which Mashburn recovered.
« A great job of defense tonight, » said Memphis head coach Ryan Silverfield. « I’m really proud of them, they played an entire game, forced two turnovers and did what it took. Obviously they carried this team today. «
Memphis defensive coordinator Mike MacIntyre is now 4-0 in his career against Navy. Before that, he faced the Midshipmen twice as head coach in the state of San Jose (2011 and 2012) and once as defensive coordinator at Duke (2008). .
