Every year when the NFL Pro Bowl squads are announced, there always seems to be a crowd of fans screaming that their teams’ standout player was not selected . . . This year is no exception. The name recognition always seems to have priority over everything else in every award that involves fan voting. This year the spots are especially important as no game is being played and therefore there are no additional alternatives to sneak into the All-Star event due to injuries or apologies from Super Bowl participants from the game. What if I told you that the best linebacker in football wasn’t selected?

What if I told you too that Demario Davis has been the best linebacker in football for the past two seasons? It may sound like a stretch, but I want you to think back on how historically horrific the New Orleans Saints defense was before it arrived in 2018. Statistically, the New Orleans Saints had the worst defense ever for 5 consecutive seasons, both in terms of total number of yards and in terms of goal defense. With all the stability that the Saints had with the football-holy trinity of coach, GM and quarterback, the Saints had a coaching carousel as a defensive coordinator. Five different coaches have held the position during Sean Payton’s tenure: Rob Ryan, Dennis Allen, Steve Spagnola, Greg Williams and Gary Gibbs. All were hired with the expectation to adapt the defense to the strength of the offensive. Demario Davis was that balance. However, the influence of the defense captain cannot be measured statistically alone. He doesn’t collect many sacks for an OLB, but his versatility is unparalleled. In 14 games he has another season with 100 tackles, 10 tfl and 4 sacks, making 4 consecutive seasons. It’s just as strong against the barrel as it is against lightning or pass coverage. Davis played all three linebacker positions for the Saints during his tenure. This allows for tremendous flexibility in Dennis Allen’s game calls, as the offense often fails to see where Davis might end up.

Although he has not yet made a single Pro-Bowl, he won the 1st place last year. Team All-Pro appointed. He is also the team’s selection for this year’s Walter Payton Man of the Year. Even so, Davis is often overlooked and seldom held responsible for the responsibility he had for the Saints’ defensive success.
