With the rest of the free agency cycle dormant, the Dodgers have repeatedly hit solid helpers in the middle of their personal comeback.
And on Wednesday they added another one – though likely someone who doesn’t help the roster much until their second year of their two-year contract.
After relying on Corey Knebel and Jimmy Nelson while entertaining a new Ryne Stanek signing, the Dodgers agreed on Wednesday on a two-year deal with former Yankees setup man Tommy Kahnle that included a long rehab Time while the exchange specialist has completed his recovery from surgery at Tommy John.
Free agent reliever Tommy Kahnle agreed to a two-year deal with Dodgers, the source told The Athletic. Kahnle was operated on by Tommy John in August.
Kahnle is an electrical helper and personality, and someone the Yankees realized was only at the core of their philosophy when they lost him in 2020 and the bridge to Chad Green / Zack Britton / Aroldis Chapman became painfully unsafe.
He only threw in one inning in 2020 before his forearm tightening turned into something more – Kahnle knocked out three batters in Washington, saved a win, and bet 0. 1 WAS as fast as a pitcher can.
The energetic Righty arrived mid-2017 in the same store that brought David Robertson to New York and made a 2. 70 ERA during the team’s playoff push. His year 2018 was disastrous (6. 56 marks and a couple of downgrades along the way) but his 2019 was great, with a 3. 67 ERA in 61. 1 decisive inning with 88 touches.

If Kahnle is able to get back to the hill he will be a great boon to the Dodgers and should fit in well with a bridging role in the seventh inning.
Despite his general wild man mood, he projects oddly little volatility as he climbs the hill.
Opposing players know they’re getting the change, they can’t track it, and their caustic smells lead to fist-pumping hill parties. If that’s your thing, you’re going to really love the second year of this deal.
