JENNER (CBS SF) – A father was dead and his two young children went missing after they were swept into the turbulent Pacific Ocean Sunday afternoon off Blind Beach near Jenner, Sonoma County.
Sonoma County Sheriff Lt. . Michael Raasch said his agency received an emergency call around 2:30 p.m.. m. Three people were reportedly in the water and were hit by a flood.
« We learned that two children were playing near the water on Blind Beach and were washed up at sea, » said Raasch. “The father who was nearby jumped into the water to save the two children. ”
« They were both his children – a 4-year-old and a 6-year-old – apparently he grabbed the 4-year-old and tried to pull him in and was apparently further swept out, » Raasch said. “The two children were swept out to sea and the father drowned. ”
Sheriff MPs and helicopters, a Coast Guard crew, California Highway Patrol officers, and lifeguards went to look for the two children.
« We’re looking for the children, we’ve found a pair of shoes, a jacket, but no trace of the children, » said Raasch. « We searched for hours and that’s where we stand. ”
There was a high surf notice on the coast by Tuesday afternoon. Forecasters warned of dangerous sneaker waves and strong currents with wave heights of up to 24 feet.
« Very rough seas, very active at the moment, » said Raasch about the conditions. “The waves are very treacherous, even very strong swimmers would have problems getting out of the water. ”
Raasch said the family recently moved to Sonoma County from another state. He said the crews would hold an overnight vigil on the beach in hopes of recovering the two children’s bodies.
