MANILA – Frontline health workers and racial justice organizers are among TIME’s 2020 Guardians, the magazine said on Friday.

In a tweet, TIME said that health workers are at the forefront of fighting coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and risking their lives.

Porche Bennett-Bey and Assa Traoré, along with racial justice activists, were also celebrated as TIME’s Guardian of the Year.

Bennett-Bey gathered on the streets of the United States asking for justice for the death of Jason Blake, a victim of police shootings in the country.

Traoré, on the other hand, is an activist from Paris with the same reason. In a TIME article, she said that George Floyd’s death “felt like a terrifying repetition of history. ”

Despite the pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement has actively called for an end to racial discrimination following the aforementioned murders.

In the meantime, Dr. . Anthony Fauci was also named TIME Guardian of the Year for « leading not only the fight against COVID-19, but the fight for the truth – clear, consistent messaging is fundamental to public health » in the US.
