Fans of the Bernard James Era Seminole teams can see something they like on this year’s Clemson Tigers (6-1) basketball team. This could be the best defense the noles see all year round. Clemson has the No.. 2 national defense and is elite in turning teams (7. in TO%) and for competition shots (13. in defensive eFG%). Nobody scored a point per possession against the Tigers.
And offensively – well, they are challenged. They buck a ton for 3s. So if you catch her on a hot night, you might as well flip the cap and move on. Clemson ranks 48th nationwide. Place as a percentage of the points scored from outside the arc. Compare that to 235. at 2s and 250. in free throws. Their main problems are a high rate of turnover and an inability to get on the line.
Her best player is Senior Aamir Simms (6-8, 245), who flirted with the NBA Draft before returning to his senior season. He will play the five in Clemson’s small ball lineup and is a major match-up problem as he has drained 41% of his 3s in the last couple of seasons. He leads the Tigers with 12 points. 1 per game and 4 grab. 7 rebounds. Head coach Leonard Hamilton has hinted at abandoning the philosophy of changing screens 1-5 when real bigs are on the floor. So don’t be surprised if FSU secures Clemson ball umbrellas with Simms. Otherwise the noles have to be small.
Sophomore Al-Amir Dawes (6-2, 180) is the other double-digit goalscorer with an average of 11. 0 per game. He met the game winner to beat FSU last year and he’s not lacking in confidence. Luckily he’s a bad shot (32% career from deep).
Fordham Transfer Nick Honor (5-10, 205) was the surprise. He only made 34% of his 3-series for the Rams last year, but he’s increased that to 42% this season, even with increased competition. He makes more shots when on the ground than any other Clemson player, so the state of Florida must take possession of him early.
You’d think Clemson was a terror in transition with a crime struggling and a defense that flips teams at 28. 3% clip, but the reality is that only 22% of your shots come in the first ten seconds of the shot watch. FSU for reference is at 31. 4%. The Tigers will certainly run when it’s wide open, but Brad Brownell prefers to restrict one game’s possessions – they’re currently 288. at the pace, so the FSU must force the action to make it a more comfortable game.
Clemson’s weaknesses in terms of their otherwise stellar defense have been a tendency to give up second chance points and the Tigers fouled a lot due to extreme pressure. If the FSU want to be the first team to score a point per possession against Clemson this year, the Seminoles will most likely have to dominate the offensive glass. And if the noles pick up a few charges by being overly aggressive on / near the rim, so be it – hold the pressure and get to the line. In Clemson’s only loss (to Virginia Tech), the Hokies made almost twice as many FTs as the Tigers tried (25-14).
Brad Brownell has used six different starting lineups in seven games. Have fun predicting. They have a couple of usable sizes, but it’s unclear how much they’ll play. Jonathan Baehre (6-10, 214) is a 24-year-old senior who was a solid starter at UNC-Asheville but hasn’t done much this season. Freshman PJ Hall (6-10, 235) highlighted her recruiting class (No.. 54 total), but outside of a 10-point, seven-rebound game in the opener against the state of Mississippi, he didn’t play much. He’s one of five blue-chip recruits on the list, two more than the state of Florida.
The game gives tips at 7pm and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra. Good luck finding it (Fox Sports South, Sun Sports, and others should wear it). . FSU opened as a 4 point underdog, but the line was set to 1. 5 points. The over / under is 130 points.
