The Toronto Raptors are back tonight as we kick off what may be the strangest season in franchise history.
COVID-19 continues to tarnish everything within the NBA and in greater detail with the Raptors, who had three confirmed cases in the organization last week. It will be a constant threat to basketball, likely for the duration of the season. At the moment, however, we are marching forward.
The Raptors will soon have their preseason schedule for three games against the Hornets. Toronto play their second game on Monday night in North Carolina with no Kyle Lowry in tow. According to reports by today’s team, Lowry was granted a personal vacation and was allowed to stay in Tampa during that short trip. In terms of pre-game availability, Nick Nurse said the absence was not virus related – just regular administration for his 34-year-old point guard.
Nick Nurse says Kyle Lowry is in « fantastic shape » and has no conditioning concerns for him. Sounds like he wants to keep it because of its age. Nurse adds that there are « no concerns about him at all. «
Nurse wouldn’t focus very much on Lowry anyway, who can safely be described as a « known crowd ». . There will also be limited play for other veterans including Aron Baynes and Fred VanVleet.
Instead, these games against Charlotte and Miami will be a testing ground for the back half of Nurse’s 10-man rotation. Norman Powell hits the grid tonight, but he and Terence Davis are the surefire members of that rotation starting the season. What the nurse hopes to see is who can play eight to ten difficult minutes from the seats.
Nick Nurse says he will try to stick to lineups that roughly correspond to the first and second session. He believes certain guys deserve a longer look at training camp tonight.
One such player to take a long look tonight is Malachi Flynn from the first round, who will act as backup point guard for Toronto against the Hornets. The Nurse also stated there would be a significant run going on for Oshae Brissett and Henry Ellenson – fringe players every other season, but good bets to make up the expanded 15-man itinerary in 2020-21.
