A non-student-athlete member of the Gonzaga Basketball Travel Society tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday and two other non-student-athletes identified by contact tracing are in isolation in separate hotel rooms in Fort Myers, Florida.

The medical staff of all four schools – Gonzaga, Kansas, Auburn, and St. . Josephs – Fort Myers Tip-Off, which is today’s season opening game, will be played as planned after a message from the tournament officials.

No.. 1 Gonzaga stands in front of No.. 6 Kansas at 10:30 a.m.. m. PT followed by Auburn versus St. . Josephs.

« It’s unfortunate that we had a positive test, but at the same time we know that our staff and student athletes have continued to follow all safety protocols, » said Mike Roth, Gonzaga Sporting Director. « We at the Florida Department of Health have confidence that all of our student athletes and coaches are confident to continue this game with all safety protocols in place. « .

« We are confident that we will not endanger any athlete or coach, anyone from Kansas, or anyone involved in the game. « . All other tests (with the exception of a positive test with a non-student athlete in the tour group) were negative. We will continue to follow all Florida Department of Health protocols. ”

The positive test result was achieved after 112 PCR tests were carried out on all members of the tour groups of all four schools on Wednesday morning. The tournament organizers then contacted the Florida Department of Health to independently conduct contact tracing that identified two other members of the GU tour group.

These two tested negative but are required to isolate themselves in their hotel rooms under the supervision of Gonzaga’s medical staff.

The four teams weren’t sure if the games would be played as the contact tracing took several hours. It was later determined by the medical staff of the four programs, in consultation with the Florida Department of Health, that today’s games could continue, Roth said.

It was not immediately known whether the three members of Gonzaga’s tour group could travel after the tournament or would need to be quarantined in Fort Myers.

« You are now under the direction and authority of the health district, » said Roth. “That decision will be based on Florida officials. Most likely, they will spend some time in Florida and certainly not travel with the team. ”
