Grey’s Anatomy fans winced when Meredith Gray (Ellen Pompeo) and George O’Malley (T. . R.. . Knight) in the second season. Recently, Pompeo and current Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff shared their first reaction to the George and Meredith moment. And apparently Pompeo still hasn’t seen the scene.

In Grey’s Anatomy season 2, Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) decided he wouldn’t choose, choose, or love Meredith. Instead, Derek got back together with his then-wife, Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh). . In episode 18, Meredith had a rough day at work and confronted her father, Thatcher Gray (Jeff Perry) for the first time in 25 years. Meredith was in a vulnerable position – and then George came in.

During Variety’s Power of Women panel in October 2020, Vernoff and Pompeo briefly touched on the connection between Meredith and George while discussing the brilliance of creator Shonda Rhimes. Pompeo pointed out that Rhimes was a « fearless creative thinker » who always knew what would work on television, even when others didn’t believe the idea. Meanwhile, Vernoff set an example.

« In the first few years of this show, we never had a single conversation I can remember changing the face of television. It was always about what will make the best story, what will be the funniest and most dramatic, ”said Vernoff. “We had big fights like George and Meredith will sleep together and then she will start crying. The showrunner continued, “We fought and there was noise. She said, « You don’t have to love it. You just have to see it and talk about it. It’s not always about being personable, it’s about being entertaining. ’”

Then Pompeo shared her opinion on the scene between George and Meredith, admitting that she was quite responsive to the Grey’s Anatomy moment.

While the moment between Meredith and George separated some Grey’s Anatomy viewers, the two surgeons were still able to move forward. Over time, George became a fan favorite. However, the character died in the season five finale of Grey’s Anatomy after jumping in front of a bus trying to rescue a stranger.

Meanwhile, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Knight cited a « communication breakdown » with Rhimes as the reason for leaving the Shondaland series. « There is just a time when it is so clear that the best decision is to keep going, » Knight said at the time.
