Meredith’s life is at stake as she battles COVID-19 in Grey’s Anatomy, and Deluca fights to be saved. The former couple split up last season but there is clearly still a lot of love between them. HollywoodLife spoke EXCLUSIVELY to Giacomo Gianniotti about the future of the relationship between Meredith and Deluca. Giacomo admitted that it would not be an easy journey for Merluca.

« In the last quarter of the 16th. Season 6 saw Deluca’s mental health seriously self-sabotaging the relationship and romance, « Giacomo told HollywoodLife. « It turned into toxic behavior that really, really negatively affected their relationship and romance, as well as Meredith’s trust and love for him. There was some serious harm done because he was not treated with medication. He did not seek or take therapy seriously. Unfortunately, damage is done. People who are in these states, some of them can be reversed, others can apologize and move on, but each case is different and case-specific. I think there is a lot of catching up to do this season. Much is being re-evaluated now that he’s trying to bring his life together. Can we work Was the damage I did too much? Did I say too much Did I do too much Are you ready to consider where we could try again? I think this question is for both people. This season they’ll be re-evaluating whether to go back that trail, but of course something else interrupted that story. Any talk of love is definitely on pause because life is the most important thing. ”

Everything has been put aside until Meredith has recovered and she is not out of the woods yet. « It’s hard because he has all these things to say and talk about, but it’s just not the right time, » Giacomo continued. “He has to check his pride, check his ego, check his wants and needs because their life is more urgent and important. Unfortunately, all these feelings he has have to wait. ”

The premiere of the 17th. Season showed the shocking return of Derek Shepherd, Meredith’s late husband, in a dream sequence. HollywoodLife asked Giacomo what he thought Deluca would think of Derek since they never had the opportunity to meet.

« I don’t know. I think he’s like that monolithic character on the show in relation to Deluca and knows what that person meant to Meredith, ”said Giacomo. “I think if you’ve ever met someone, or know someone who lost their great love and had to move on and is now with someone else, the only way you can really be with that person is by fully respecting the amount of love that you have will keep that person in that person’s heart forever. You are not replacing this person. You can not. it’s unimaginable, isn’t it? But you literally step into their role as someone who will love and support that person. Deluca is someone who is very focused on his career, very good at what he does, and has worked very hard to get where he is in a short amount of time, much faster than many of his peers. I think he probably respects him a lot, what an incredible neurosurgeon he was, what he achieved in his career, and I think he would have tremendous respect for Derek. ”

The long-running medical drama wasn’t currently for 18th. Season extended. Ellen Pompeo admitted in a recent interview that « it could be this year, » but nothing has been decided yet. Giacomo admitted that it would be more than happy if the show turned 17. Season would continue.

Honestly, what I got on my mind is that Grey’s Anatomy has always been a social themed show. It has always been a reflection of the times, the challenges we face, the injustices we face and highlights issues that need to be addressed. These issues never end. Every season we can bring new ideas, new topics, new people, new diseases to light. I just feel a great honor and privilege to be able to tell these stories and highlight these heroes. This season is unanimously about our healthcare workers, who were largely excluded from the media during this period. People haven’t really gotten an honest look at what it was like to be in a hospital, what it was like to work in a hospital, what it was like to work in the conditions they had to work in. They were understaffed and under-prepared for PPE. They had to use masks for several days when the law said they should go through 8 or 9 in a day. They literally lost their colleagues. Doctors and nurses died and gave their lives during this pandemic. They are soldiers so we really want to tell their stories. I feel a great honor and privilege to hopefully portray them accurately and make them feel like they are being seen. I think a lot of people have been – for lack of a better word – a little selfish about me, I have to stay home, I have to disinfect my hands without really knowing the extreme situations these nurses face and doctors face them. They dream of being at home with their families and watching Netflix all day. They dreamed of having this opportunity. « Grey’s Anatomy airs at 8pm on Thursdays. m. on ABC.
