. .
Jon « Boog » Sciambi is the new play-by-play voice of Chicago Cubs baseball, Marquee Sports Network said Monday.
Sciambi is widely recognized as one of the game’s best announcers and a mainstay for ESPN TV and radio. He succeeds Len Kasper, who was released from his marquee contract after 16 seasons to become radio announcer for the Crosstown Chicago White Sox.
It wasn’t immediately clear how many games Sciambi would be partnering with analyst Jim Deshaies for Marquee, the joint television company the Cubs launched with Sinclair Broadcast Group last season.
Sciambi will continue to work for ESPN, where he has appeared on ESPN Radio’s « Sunday Night Baseball » and « Wednesday Night Major League Baseball » on TV shows.
An ESPN spokesperson said Sciambi will have fewer weekday MLB TV shows due to his Cubs deal, but his MLB work on ESPN Radio and college basketball duties will more or less remain the same. Sciambi has worked for ESPN since 2005 and became a full-time job for the media giant in 2010.
« Having the opportunity to come to Wrigley Field every day and call games for the Chicago Cubs is surreal, » Sciambi said in Marquee’s announcement. « It really doesn’t get any better. ”
Sciambi was previously the lead play-by-play announcer for the Atlanta Braves from 2007 to 2009 and the radio voice for the Florida Marlins from 1997 to 2004.
« We are excited to welcome Boog to the Marquee Network and the Cubs organization, » said Crane Kenney, president of business operations for the Cubs, in a statement. « We are confident that he will expand the incredible legacy of the Cubs stations and quickly become a trusted friend of our great fans. « . ”
Mike McCarthy, general manager of Marquee Sports Network, said in the network’s press release, “Nobody deserves the seat more than Jon. ”
