Jacob Young and Myles Johnson began to approach Kadary Richmond as soon as Syracuse’s screen peeled off. It was nearing the six-minute mark in the first half as Rutgers’ two defenders put their arms in the air, pushing the Orange point guard back near midfield, and forcing Richmond to resume dribbling.
On the bench, Joe Girard III, SU’s regular point guard, sat with his hands clasped next to assistant coach Gerry McNamara. Richmond ordered the SU offensive against the Scarlet Knights for the fifth time, navigating the trap and passing a pass to John Bol Ajak under the basket. This caused Woody Newton to slump, closing Syracuse’s early deficit at five.
For most of Syracuse’s first three games, it was Girard who trickled the ball onto the pitch that set off the offensive in blowout wins and was approached by head coach Jim Boeheim in the late games against Richmond. But as Tuesday night – even after Girard removed his orange mask after his brief hiatus and walked back to the goalscoring table – Richmond brought the ball up further and Girard was floating in an off-ball role.
The role of Richmond has increased dramatically in the last three games. Buddy Boeheim had to pause due to COVID-19 contact tracing. His time increased from nine minutes in the opener to more than 30 minutes against Niagara, Rider and Rutgers. He’s not ready for that workload, however, Boeheim said after the game. “He’s getting tired. ”
As Richmond’s extra minutes and his mirroring have increased, so has the number of properties he is supposed to entrust to develop game after game. He scored six points, distributed seven assists, grabbed three rebounds and only flipped the ball twice in Syracuse’s 79-69 loss to Rutgers. He was the most active defender at the head of the zone, the quickest invader, the source of life when the Orange offensive needed it most in Girard’s ongoing battles. And how he fits into her offense and defense after Buddy’s return could create a much-needed spark when the conference game looms large.
« He will bring it up with Joe sometimes and Joe will bring it up sometimes, » Boeheim said. « We’re going to mix it up, but either of them can. ”
Richmond came from Syracuse’s preseason and was just the promising newbie with no gaming experience. He was the « really good penetrator, » Boeheim said at his season opening press conference in November. 12th. The newbie who didn’t make a lot of mistakes. The sniper and finisher on the trail – and the point guard, not the little striker – who is better than expected.
« He’s a newbie and you just have to learn a few things, » Quincy Guerrier said in November. 17th.
But, said Boeheim at the time, reiterating after Syracuse’s win over the Bulldogs, it would be some time before Richmond achieved that potential. When a walk-in player tested positive and forced Buddy out after contact tracing, it accelerated Richmond’s development.
In the first few minutes of his first start against Niagara, he found Marek Dolezaj on track for a one and drove, later owned, in the left lane, missing his layup and finishing the ball off his own offensive rebound. He was the « difference in the game, » said Boeheim.
« He gives a different dynamic with his ability to bring the ball to color, » said Niagara head coach Greg Paulus on December. 3. « He’s a good size and the more experience he has, the more comfortable he becomes. ”
That continued at the beginning of his second start against Rider when he lifted Syracuse’s first possession and hit a 3-pointer. Tuesday’s game at Piscataway was the first real test against a senior opponent and the last test for Richmond before Buddy returned to the grid. By games played dec. . 8, Richmond finished 25th with a 6. Place in the country. 1 theft percentage and 167. Support rate.
None of the first four possessions he used to land the ball ended in points. Dolezaj missed a pick-and-roll shot on one and a moving screen on another. When Richmond stepped out of his chair and went to the goalscorer’s table at 7:50 in the half, his elevated role as Orange’s point guard coincided with mini-runs that helped them return against Rutgers. When Guerrier threw a cross-court pass to Richmond in the second half with four minutes remaining, his quick touch against Dolezaj was unbalanced and prevented the defender from recovering from Rutgers to defend the jump shot – which Dolezaj hit to Syracuses Reduce the deficit to three.
Six minutes later, he hit the baseline, waiting for the Scarlet Knights’ aid to slip before weaving the ball around the pair and finding Alan Griffin on the opposite block.
« Kadary isn’t going to score much, but he’s done plays and some good things, » said Boeheim. « I don’t think he’ll be a great goalscorer. ”
Syracuse’s backcourt, led by Girard and Richmond, only scored nine points in 2v13. It was the third time this season that Girard has scored fewer than six goals.
But for Richmond, it was those « good things » – those little things like entering and driving in lanes, those glitches and breaking apart at the top of the 2-3 zone – that slowly began to shape its role in Syracuse’s lineup onward go.
