World News – USA – Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes passes everyone in the 2020 MVP race

Like many of the regularly used Undertaker GIFs, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes got off the mat when everyone thought he was buried in this year’s MVP race thanks to another standout at 35: 31 win on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders.

The victory set two standards. First, the Chiefs are the team to beat in AFC West. Second, Mahomes jumped to the top of the MVP hierarchy.

At some point, greatness fatigue becomes very real. Ask Michael Jordan, LeBron James, or Mike Trout. Everyone dominated their respective sport for so long that voters began voting others for MVP even though they arguably weren’t the best.

Take the goat’s mindset and contrast it with Mahomes. Obviously the two approach their sports differently. They have a similar competitive fire, however. Mahomes became an NFL MVP when he was only 23. He is the reigning Super Bowl MVP. Nobody should ever forget what they are capable of, especially at crucial moments.

Yet for most of that season, Russell Wilson had been built by the Seattle Seahawks as a runaway favorite for capturing the hardware. To be fair, the six-time Pro Bowl caller played exceptionally well for the first five weeks. He then threw three interceptions during week 7 overtime against rival Arizona Cardinals. In fact, Wilson has had seven interceptions during his last five appearances. The Seahawks are 2-3 during this stretch.

In Wilson’s place, Kyler Murray rose like a phoenix from the ashes to assert his claim to being the MVP front runner and only stalled pretty quickly.

Arizona’s sophomore quarterback is the game’s greatest double threat. A spectacular and unlikely 43-yard throw against the DeAndre Hopkins, now dubbed « Hail Murray, » briefly stoked the fires in Murray’s favor. A less than excellent performance against the sad secondary and previously sad defense of the Seahawks on Thursday didn’t help.

Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers stepped up as the league’s most efficient quarterback this weekend. But he missed several throws during a 34:31 loss on Sunday to the AFC South-leading Indianapolis Colts.

One argument can be made in Ben Roethlisberger’s favor based on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ undefeated record after setting an 8-6 record in games without their franchise quarterback last year. The 38 year old gunslinger’s health was the most important aspect of her success.

But this is not college football. The player with the highest profile on the best team is not automatically considered seriously for the largest individual award in the game.

Mahomes is different. He’s not just a great quarterback; He’s the best overall player in a quarterback league.

His latest performance shows that no matter when, how, or why the Chiefs are in trouble, all they have to do is get the ball into their franchise player’s hands and everything will be fine.

The Raiders’ Derek Carr played exceptionally well against Kansas City. He and the Raiders had something to prove and what they could become. Carr is on the brink of becoming an elite quarterback. He looked like one throughout Sunday night’s game until the final drive in Las Vegas when he was forced to shove the ball down – Las Vegas had 19 seconds to travel 75 yards – resulting in a safety interception led by Daniel Sorensen.

Take a second to think about where the Chiefs sat during this competition. The Kansas City Defense sought to slow, let alone stop, the Raiders’ offensive. Carr graduated from 74. 2 percent of his passes for 275 yards and three points. He showed how to play in rhythm and in external structure. The chiefs didn’t have a good answer all night.

Carr’s performance puts Mahomes’ brilliance into perspective. Kansas City was three points down 1:43 and another goal was never an option. Mahomes marched 75 yards in just seven games to score the game-winning touchdown.

« I am absolutely confident that if we have time on the clock we will score, » Mahomes told reporters.

What many may not see is how the quarterback created a wide open opportunity for Travis Kelce.

Initially, the Raiders showed shared safety precautions at the Snap. None of the recipients were open to the goal. Mahomes broke away and worked his way up the field, bringing Johnathan Abram to safety. The quarterback’s movement skills made way for Kelce for a relatively easy touchdown with the game on the line.

As noted by NFL Next Gen Stats, Mahomes made nine of 15 passes by completing 105 yards and an on-the-run touchdown. Mileage is the best in this category this season.

That’s what Mahomes does. He does these things regularly. It doesn’t matter if he’s asked to, which could amount to a meaningless regular season or Super Bowl competition. Mahomes is the ultimate playmaker of the game.

According to Stats Perform, Mahomes was the first quarterback in NFL history to score three direct attempts with 30 or more degrees and a quarterback rating of over 100. This season the highest-paid player in the league has an excellent touchdown to interception ratio of 27-2.

At 9-1, the Chiefs can argue that they are the best team in the NFL, even though the Steelers haven’t lost yet. Kansas City has just avenged its only loss. As long as Mahomes is the same player he always was, he will run away voting for a second MVP trophy and the Chiefs will be considered Super Bowl favorites
