LeBron James will be enjoying this NFL Sunday with the rest of us, but he has his eye on one particular player on an NFL team that he has no roots for.

LeBron went on Twitter this morning and gave a salute to the New York Giants defensive end Niko Lalos, who is making his NFL debut after joining the active squad. LeBron and Lalos share a common bond: their high school alma mater.

Both LeBron and Lalos visited St. . Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron. Only a handful of NFL players have played for the Fighting Irish, particularly Colts wide receiver Parris Campbell.

But Niko Lalos had a more difficult path to the NFL than Campbell. He grew up in a single-parent household and barely knew his father for most of his life.

But he survived a challenging childhood, then attended Dartmouth University for the Ivy League – not exactly known as the NFL factory.

According to the New York Post, Lalos was not drafted at a time his mother was battling cancer.

It’s a story almost anyone can leave behind, whether you’re a fan of the New York Giants or not.

LeBron James certainly feels related to the young man and stands up for him. And so do we.
