It is the first meeting of the two teams in 13 years and the first home game of a team since 1991.

Believe it or not, I’m bad at the geography of Oklahoma. Okay, so you know what Oklahoma looks like like a kitchen pot with a long handle?

Sure. Okay, if you think about the pot part and ignore the handle, Oklahoma City is pretty much the dead center.

sorry. It’s okay. However, Stillwater is about 65 miles northeast of Oklahoma City. Of the two Division 1 state schools in Oklahoma, OSU is definitely the more rural of the two. Home of the University of Oklahoma, Norman is part of the Oklahoma City subway area, even if it’s one county south of OKC.

Founded: 1890 as Oklahoma Territorial Agricultural and Mechanical College. Classes would begin in December 1891, but a university-owned building would not be completed until June 1894. The building now known as Old Central is still on campus today and is currently home to the OSU Honors College. Changes to the curriculum in 1957 led to a name change at Oklahoma State University of Agricultural and Applied Sciences. While the school was largely run by Oklahoma State University, that wasn’t the school’s official name until 1980.

The flagship: OSU’s Stillwater campus is the primary facility in the Oklahoma State University system. I’m pointing out just to point out that the University of Oklahoma is not part of that system. It seems strange to have a state school that is not part of the official state university system, doesn’t it?

One hard left turn: look, I’m not going to lie to you, I get the general notes on the history of schools in these articles to learn about 1) the official school history pages on their websites and 2) the Wikipedia pages for the schools. So if you head over to the OSU Wikipedia page and the history section, you get pretty much what you expect. Blah blah lawmakers, blah blah first building, blah blah first dormitory, blah blah, T. . Boone Pickens is incredibly rich. And then the last sentence of a section that tells you the story of the boring history of starting and growing a Land Grant university:

On 24. October 2015, Adacia Chambers drove her vehicle into a crowd during the annual homecoming parade, killing 4 people and injuring 47. She was convicted of murder 2. Degree charged.

WHAT THE HELL? Look, I’m not trying to say no to the deaths of four people here, but this is a shocking conclusion to what very boring historical read is and is supposed to be, and I’m not sure how that fits into « here. » the history of the university’s existence.

When is a parade not a parade? If it’s a walkaround. Homecoming is a big deal at OSU, to the point where they call it « America’s Biggest Homecoming Celebration. ». The first homecoming parade took place in 1930 and grew from then on. . . . . . to the point where decorating the houses on the parade route became a big deal. Finally, in 1966, it got to the point where they just gave up the parade and people started walking around – got it? – to see the house decorations. Three years later, home decorating for Walkaround became an official competition as part of Homecoming.

Bedlam: You may have heard the name of the Oklahoma State rivalry with the University of Oklahoma, especially if you are listening to the Shutdown fullcast. While there are many jokes about the nature of the rivalry between the two in football, the OSU’s stance on the subject is that the nickname actually came from the wrestling programs. The state of Oklahoma has won 34 national championships against just seven of the Sooners, and legend has it that a newspaper reporter broke out of a meeting and described the contents of the Gallagher-Iba Arena as, duh, chaos.

Do you remember Old Central from a minute ago? The bell tower clapper became the trophy for the OSU / OU football game in 1966 after residents of the Norman campus may have committed a petty theft to prevent the residents of Stillwater from ringing the bell to celebrate a victory in 1932. Today, a crystal version of the clapper goes to the Bedlam winner in every sport, as well as a trophy that scores more victories in the sport every school year.

Why « cowboys »? I don’t know when I start typing this, but I bet it’s not that interesting relative to the school’s location. Let’s find out, shall we?

Yes, it is not. In 1924 the Oklahoma City Times began referring to the (then) Oklahoma A&M teams as « Cowboys, » although the usual nicknames were more like Aggies, Farmers, and, because they thought they were « The Princeton of the Plains, » ” Tiger, complete with the orange and black color scheme.

But maybe that’s not the whole story: Pistol Pete, OSU’s mascot, is apparently based on an actual human, Frank Eaton, and let me tell you what, you should read his story. Around the same time the papers were calling them cowboys, OSU students saw Eaton lead the Stillwater Armistice Day parade, and . . . . . somehow? Eaton was convinced they would serve as the basis for a cartoon drawing for a mascot so that they could replace the nickname Tigers, which apparently no one really liked. That’s what happens when you try to just steal another university’s entire deal I guess. Although the Eaton drawing has been around since 1923, the mascot « Guy in Suit » has only been used at sporting events since 1958.

Notable Alumni: How is Garth Brooks doing for you? Remarkable enough? There is also the T mentioned above. . Boone Pickens, well-known oil magnate and generally insanely rich OSU booster; UFC heavyweight champions Randy Couture and Daniel Cormier; Chester Gould, the creator of Dick Tracy; Pro Football Hall by Famer Barry Sanders; Kevin Stitt, the current governor of Oklahoma; Kansas basketball coach Bill Self, who is sure to be no trouble for OSU fans; Actor James Marsden, known as Cyclops in the X-Men films; Astronaut Stuart Roosa, who flew on Apollo 14; professional wrestler Jack & Jerry Brisco; and finally actor Gary Busey.

Last season: 18-14, with a 7-11 record in the Big 12 after starting 0-6 in the league game.

This season: 2-0, with a street win over UT-Arlington and a home win over Texas Southern.

I expected the returning part to be more interesting. Yeah, it’s always a bummer when they all turn out to be the same guy. In this instance, Likekele led the team in assists while finishing second behind Cameron McGriff on points and rebounds.

Bigs? Not in the traditional sense of having an obviously large body in the middle. At 6’10 ”, the second Bernard Kouma is the tallest man on the team, but he has only played eight minutes so far this season. Kaleb Boone qualifies as the tallest of the guys to start in the OSU’s first two games, but at 6’9  » he weighs just 210 pounds. Leading rebounder Isaac Likekele is only 6 to 5 inches tall and weighs 215 pounds. Keylan Boone (6’8 « , 200 lb. . ) is Kaleb’s twin and second on the team if he bounces back in two games with eight per game, while Cade Cunningham (6’8 ”, 220 lb. ). ) is third at seven per excursion. In short, they have great people, but not great ones, if that makes sense.

Protect? 6’3 ”Senior Ferron Flavors has tried 12 threesomes so far this season to lead the squad in that division, and sinking five of them gives him a 41-shot percentage. 7%. Cal Baptist’s grad transfer shot 44. 6% a year ago and 33. 6% for Fairfield in 2017-18 so this seems like a realistic representation of what he can do. Newbies Cade Cunningham and Rondel Walker each hit three of their first seven college long-distance attempts, which is pretty good. 6’3 ”sophomore Avery Anderson is 5-2 so far this season, which has earned him as many brands as last year in 26 attempts in 30 games.

Potential 2021 NBA Draft Picks? Yes, I included this on purpose because I knew the answer to the question was yes and we need to talk about it. If you haven’t heard it, we should probably point out that Cade Cunningham came to Stillwater as number 1 in the 2020 class, according to 247 Sports. If you’re the best high school player in the country, you’re pretty much an automatic scheduled lottery pick, if not the projected number 1 in the following year’s draft. The state of Oklahoma isn’t the first name that comes to mind when you think of a « tippy top NBA prospect destination, » but the Cowboys have drawn in eight top 25 prospects since the turn of the century. Gerald Green was also the No.. 1 in the country while LeBryan Nash (# 8, 2011) and Marcus Smart (# 10, 2012) were the top 10 in their respective classes. Still, it’s a bit of a surprise that Cunningham chose OSU. . . . . until I tell you that Cannen Cunningham, Cade’s older brother, is an assistant coach on that team. It’s really impressive that Cunningham actually enrolled in the state of Oklahoma because the NCAA put a postseason ban on the OSU in June of this year for 2021. The Cowboys very publicly supported Cunningham in making the decision he believed was best for the future, but ultimately the reasons why he chose OSU won out.

Head Coach: Mike Boynton, his fourth season in the state of Oklahoma and fourth season overall as head coach. He has a record of 53-49 after being raised by the assistant coach when Brad Underwood took the job in Illinois after the 2016-17 season.

What to Look For: Uh, duh, Cade Cunningham. He played almost 80% of the first two games and has a usage rate north of 30%. . This shouldn’t come as a surprise. He’s the planned number 1 in next year’s NBA draft, and Mike Boynton gives him the keys to the car. It’s not that it doesn’t work. Sure, two games are a tiny sample size and it’s not that OSU played two John Wooden UCLA All-Stars teams, but Cunningham was just what you would expect from a planned top pick. Good shooting, good rebound, good quality pass, a bunch of getting on the line, etc. . , Etc. He had five turnovers in the first game, possibly due to Oklahoma State being four minutes ahead of UT against Ar-Arlington.

In terms of the whole team, the only major weakness the Cowboys have in two games is that they don’t generate defense revenues. 12% of possessions end this way, which is currently number 220 in the country, according to KenPom. com, and that would have been by far the last in the country a year ago. Two more games. Small sample size theater. Given that MU started each of its first two games coughing up its first two possessions, it’s worth noting that the state of Oklahoma does not seem willing to try this a third time.

OSU has shown good defensive performance in the first two games, but that’s a bit of a misnomer if you dig deeper. They kept UT-Arlington and Texas Southern together for 18% three-point and 50% free-throw shooting. None of these numbers will stand up to long-term test. Not only will these numbers skyrocket as the Cowboys play more games, but they’re both things the OSU can’t control at all. Obviously, free throw gunnery defense has nothing to do with anything the Oklahoma State does on defense, and since the point of three-way shooting is to give your best shooters the best and most open look you can get for them guys who have favourited the shots miss very little to do with what the OSU does against them.

They do a pretty good job, however, of preventing their two enemies from firing their shots. Your 31st. A three-point defense rate of 9% in defense would have ended up in the country’s top 40 a year ago, although this season it is “only” # 62 so far. Part of it is the OSU’s drive to keep the guys from going open, but part of it could also be down to some deliberate scheme of their opponents. With Marquette firing more than 42% of her shots from behind the bow, the state of Oklahoma will be more inclined to deny gazes in this game.

All-time series: Oklahoma State leads, 4-1. The Cowboys won the first three meetings in the series, the first being in Milwaukee in 1990. The end result there: OSU 70, Marquette 43. The state of Oklahoma, which was unrated at the time, would eventually make it into the top 15 of the AP poll and reach the Sweet 16. The next meeting was the following season, and # 3 Oklahoma State defeated MU, 64-52, in Stillwater. That was Bryant « Big Country » Reeves’ first season for the Cowboys, and they would hit Sweet 16 again. The next three meetings in the series were all held in neutral courts, so this is the first meeting in a home arena since Aug.. January 1992. Oklahoma State was ranked for each of the next two competitions, beating MU 74-62 in the first round of the 1993 NCAA tournament and then again in November 1998. That was a 57-54 win for the Cowboys in 13th place at a University of Hawaii event. Finally, Marquette clinched her first win over Oklahoma State in their final game, which was on Jan.. November 2007 and won the semifinals of the Maui Invitational between 91 and 61. Jerel McNeal had 20 points, five rebounds and three assists to lead the team to victory. There is actually a photo gallery of this game.
