Week 16 review
Reporting on the impact of the coronavirus on the sports world
After a strong start to the season, the Brooklyn Nets were dealt a severe blow when Spencer Dinwiddie suffered a partially torn ACL in his right knee, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. Dinwiddie sustained the injury during Sunday night’s game against the Charlotte Hornets in Brooklyn when he landed awkwardly on his right leg after going to the basket against Bismack Biyombo. He fell to the ground and grabbed his right knee for a few seconds, but was soon able to hobble onto the bench on his own. He didn’t return to the game and the nets locked him out with a knee strain while they waited for another evaluation.
Dinwiddie has had no other structural damage to the knee, according to Charania, and is expected to recover fully before the start of next season. The seven-year-old security guard had the best year of his career last season, averaging 20 years old. 6 points, 6. 8 templates and 3. 5 rebounds as the starting point for most games while Kyrie Irving and Caris LeVert missed portions of the season. Dinwiddie hadn’t played since March as he hadn’t traveled to the Orlando Bubble with the team to play at the NBA reboot.
The loss of Dinwiddie is a severe blow to a Nets team that started the season incredibly strong after Irving and Kevin Durant made their long-awaited debut together. He was the perfect match to play in the background alongside Irving as he can take on whatever identity you want him to be. He’s also been able to start with Irving and play the ball out, which has been his role so far this season, or move to the second unit and let him run the show, which is what he’s usually known for.
Dinwiddie can get to the edge pretty much at will, knocking down mid-range shots, and occasionally connecting with 3 pointers, despite his mediocre off-arc shooting averages. He was part of the immense depth Brooklyn possessed, which made it so dangerous for other teams.
