On Monday the 14th. December, New York City Football Club announced that three players tested positive for coronavirus ahead of their game against Tigres UANL.

The Concacaf Champions League continues today with the quarter-finals between Tigres UANL and New York City FC. In the first leg, the Liga MX team defeated the MLS team 1-0, so they have the advantage in the second leg and the game will take place in Orlando, Florida.

Prior to that game, NYCFC reported three cases of coronavirus so they had to take out emergency loans. The MLS team acquired goalkeeper Mason Stajduhar on loan from Orlando City as a fourth goalkeeping option. Sean Johnson did not travel because he was in close contact with the players who tested positive.

« I am sad to say that I will not be joining the Orlando team as I have been declared a close contact with one of the players who recently tested positive for Covid, » Johnson said on Twitter. « I have tested negative so far and hope to continue to do so. « 

NYCFC head coach Ronny Deila said second goalkeeper Luis Barraza will take Johnson’s place in the starting XI and Stajduhar will be the second option if injured. « Luis has been fighting for closeness to the team for two years and I’m very happy that he now gets a chance, » said Deila.
