New Japan Pro Wrestling is currently negotiating a new English-language television contract, reports Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer.
Meltzer says the deal is « very tight » and that an announcement that would mark the promotion’s return to full English-language TV coverage for the first time since 2019 could be imminent.
NJPW previously aired on AXS TV in the US. That deal began in 2014 when the network was covering New Japan shows (usually with a delay) with English commentary as part of NJPW’s expansion in the US, with Jim Ross, Josh Barnett and Mauro Ranallo stopping by WWE through the announcement booth. That deal ended when Anthem Sports and Entertainment bought AXS TV in late 2019 and confirmed that there would be no more NJPW programming on the network.
Anthem is the parent company of Impact Wrestling and has effectively shifted its own promotion to AXS in place of NJPW. Impact lives there to this day.
Although NJPW’s American expansion has slowed in recent years, its promotion has continued NJPW of America’s presence throughout the global health crisis. Using its world streaming service to broadcast weekly episodes of STRONG from California.
