Today’s Google Doodle celebrates Sir W. Arthur Lewis, who received the Nobel Prize in Economics on that day in 1979 for his work on Modeling the Economic Forces Affecting Developing Countries. Lewis, an economist from St. Lucia, in addition to being a pioneer in his research, was « the first black faculty member at the London School of Economics to become the first black person to hold a professorship at a UK university (Manchester University). ». and the first black instructor to become a full professor at Princeton University, ”according to Google Doodle.
Sir William Arthur Lewis was born on Jan.. January 1915 in St. Lucia, a former British colony. Despite the challenges posed by racial discrimination, Lewis received a government scholarship in 1932 and began studying at the London School of Economics, where he received a PhD in industrial economics. At 33, Lewis was a full professor.
In 1954, Lewis published an article entitled « Unlimited Labor Economic Development, » which looked at world economic history and development.
In his life, Lewis also contributed his work to the United Nations and served as an advisor to governments in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. He also helped set it up and was the first president of the Caribbean Development Bank.
