Adel Abdul Bary was deported after a senior New York judge concluded that the prisoner was at high risk of contracting Covid-19, due in part to his weight.

In 1998, Bary was the Europe-based publicist for al-Qaeda leaders, telling journalists that the terrorist group had bombed US embassies in East Africa.

In 1999, Scotland Yard Bary detectives arrested as co-conspirators in the embassy attacks. More than 200 people were killed in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam – al-Qaida’s largest single attack on American targets at the time.

This arrest – and that of other major suspects in the UK – sparked a mammoth extradition war that lasted until 2012 when it was finally flown to the US.

His confession in Manhattan federal court confirmed that he had sent messages from journalists to Osama bin Laden from London and faxed news organizations confirming that al-Qaeda was behind the embassy attacks.

In October of this year, the US authorities approved Bary’s release after serving 21 years of his 25-year prison sentence.

His release was scheduled for the end of the year after US authorities took into account the 14 years he had spent in prison in the UK prior to extradition and his good behavior since then.

But it was easily brought forward after a court heard evidence that he was at high risk of catching Covid and dying if he stayed in prison for longer.

In the October ruling sanctioning Bary’s release, U.S. federal judge Lewis Kaplan said the grace should allow the perpetrator to be with his family as this may be the last phase of his life.

« The [US] government admits that the defendant gave exceptional and compelling reasons for his release, » the judge said.

« The government notes that the defendant was diagnosed as obese in 2019 and that his body mass index was 36 as of April 2020, well above the obesity threshold.

« On this basis, the government admits that the defendant has brought an exceptional and compelling circumstance [for release]. .

After his release from federal prison, US immigration officials took him to a detention center before flying him to the UK on Tuesday.

After his arrival in London, the Egyptian Bary is said to have been brought to his family home.

The now 60-year-old US lawyer previously told journalists that his client now wants to lead a quiet life.

When prisoners convicted of terrorist offenses are released from prison in the UK, the case will be further monitored by a team of police and probation officers who also take into account information from MI5.

Some criminals live on quietly and end up being placed on the Security Service’s massive list of former terrorist suspects. Others who have links with extremists or are trying to revive them after years in prison are currently under investigation.

Next year an investigation will be conducted into how a released perpetrator murdered two people in London in 2019.
