The Detroit Pistons opened the 2020-21 season with a 111-101 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. You could say the Pistons outperformed the T-Wolves after leading the entire game until Minnesota took the lead by just over three minutes in the fourth quarter.

Detroit built a 14-point lead in the second quarter, which was boosted by the high-quality appearance of the color in the first half of the year. They couldn’t take advantage of that lead as they consistently sent the Timberwolves to the free throw line. Minnesota finished the game with 28 tries from the charity strip.

Killian Hayes made his NBA debut and looked nervous in the first half. He eventually calmed down and saw a few shots being fired in the third quarter and finished the game with seven points, three assists and four turnovers. Two of those sales came in late fourth quarter, which eventually led to quick break dunks for the Timberwolves. After these TOs, Casey decided to let Derrick Rose finish the game.

Casey moves to Rose after two turns from Hayes late in the game. The other day he was talking about not only letting boys make a million mistakes and playing through them, but also watching and learning. Hayes got his chance to close it.

Rose had an impressive performance, consistently pushing the ball into transition throughout the competition and finding teammates for a simple peek at the rim. Rose finished with 7 points on Jan.. 7th. From the floor and 6 templates.

Detroit added a ton of high quality looks throughout the game. During the quick break, they consequently accelerated the pace, which should be a basic requirement for this team in the future. Josh Jackson had an extremely efficient outing, scoring his first three points and being the recipient of most of those looks on the quick break. He threw in 19 points, 6 boards, and 2 assists on 8/14 off the floor and 3/7 of three.

Also a big thank you to Mason Plumlee for being the best player for Detroit in this game. Plumlee regularly hired his teammates (6 templates) and converted most of his looks in color (14 points when shooting 7/8). .

For Minnesota, they were spearheaded by their two young stars in D’Angelo Russell and Karl Anthony-Towns. Russell got off the bench and scored 18 points in 33 minutes. The cities effectively handled some nasty problems and still had almost triple doubles. He punished the pistons in the paint and hit a clutch three in the fourth quarter – he finished the game with 22 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists.

For Detroit, there have been many positive lessons learned from this achievement, although this loss will be a bitter pill to swallow. Detroit produced some great looks in the transition and from the three-dot line, though they didn’t turn those attempts into a respectable clip from in depth.
